Bio

I've been a math professor for over 20 years, and I love showing students how fun math can be. I've worked with students and teachers at all grade levels, from elementary school to college, and I love sharing my passion and excitement for logic and mathematical thinking and proofs with others. I was a math major and physics minor in college. I then went to Brown University for a PhD in algebraic number theory. I've been at Williams College ever since, and I founded and direct PZ Math Camp, a summer camp for high school math students.

I've met many people who don't think of themselves as skilled in math, and I love changing their minds. Math is about so much more than numbers and computation. It's not about memorization. It's a language to describe the patterns, logic, and symmetry that exist in the everyday world around us. No matter what a person's career goals may be, learning how to be more logical and think more rigorously has never been more important than it is today.

Common Core

Common Core

I am extremely familiar with the Common Core standards having worked for many years training elementary and middle school teachers. I ran summer workshops as well as in-school professional development trainings for teachers at different levels of math.I was a math major and physics minor in college and I have a PhD from Brown University in algebraic number theory.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I have taught Discrete Math several times at Williams College. It's one of my favorite courses to teach, because students get to see how much more there is to math beyond calculations. Discrete is a great place to practice mathematical exploration and discovery and the kind of mathematical thinking that is useful across all disciplines. I was a math major and physics minor in college and I have a PhD from Brown University in algebraic number theory.
Logic

Logic

Logic is the foundation of mathematics, and is one of the most important ways that studying math can be beneficial in all other disciplines. I teach foundational logic skills in almost every math class I teach, from my high school math camp to my upper level college courses. I was a math major and physics minor in college and I have a PhD from Brown University in algebraic number theory.
