Hey, I'm Alex. I'm a web developer and programming/CS tutor based out of the Northampton, MA area. I have over 350 hours of teaching and tutoring experience.

I was a mentor for the online web development bootcamp Viking Code School with a total of 5 students who I met with twice a week. Three of them continued to work with me one-on-one to continue in the curriculum after Viking was bought up by another code school.

Hey, I'm Alex. I'm a web developer and programming/CS tutor based out of the Northampton, MA area. I have over 350 hours of teaching and tutoring experience.

I was a mentor for the online web development bootcamp Viking Code School with a total of 5 students who I met with twice a week. Three of them continued to work with me one-on-one to continue in the curriculum after Viking was bought up by another code school.

I’ve helped students at almost all levels of learning, from teens learning basic programming skills to people at a professional level just tuning up their skills for job interviews.

I love teaching because every session reminds me of what got me excited about programming in the first place. Every field has a core of simple concepts that are beautiful and, if taught well, easy to understand. Instead of treating the material as a dry list of facts and exercises, I treat every session as a real conversation where I try to share my genuine enthusiasm for the material. Any averagely intelligent person can learn almost any topic up to a high level if there's someone there to help with the little mental roadblocks that come up along the way.

I favor a Socratic approach, asking a lot of questions (most of them easy) and doing small, simple exercises so you come to the solution mostly on your own.

I work remotely, so my hours are very flexible. I'm available for online or in-person sessions 7 days a week. I look forward to hearing from you!

I've been working with JavaScript to some degree or another for over 10 years. I've worked extensively most of the standard technologies associated with JS, including React, jQuery, Webpack and Babel. Among other roles, I have extensive experience with React development from my work as a front-end application developer for a startup based in New Hampshire. I worked full time for about a year before continuing a few months on a freelance basis. Although the company itself is now largely wound down, one of its products, was acquired by another company and is now the most popular decentralized web site on the market.

I've built or contributed to several web apps using PHP, including building a Laravel-based site for a large podcast network to allow donors to update and maintain their account and billing information. I've also worked on Drupal projects and built a large extension for CiviCRM.

I've worked with Python to some degree or another throughout my career in software. When working as a software engineer at Riverbed Technology, I contributed to a project. Working as a full stack developer for LBRY (a New Hampshire based startup), I've worked on the back end written in Python with Twisted. I've worked with most of the core technologies and libraries commonly associated with Python, including Django, Twisted, lxml, Requests, and so on.

Alex is meant to be a tutor! He certainly has the knowledge and he's honed the ability to teach and enlighten. Do not hesitate to ask him those questions you think are ridiculous or unimportant - he has an opinion to offer and leaves it to you to understand and grow with it in mind or move past. Fantastic Experience!!! This was my first time hiring a tutor to help with programming and I was apprehensive about asking for help. With a day and a half before my final React project was due I reached out to Alex and from the start he made me feel completely at ease. He was super easy to work with and extremely well versed in React/JS. He was insightful, patient, extremely laid back and funny. Throughout the process he went at my pace always making sure that I was understanding the concepts as well as the syntax as we went, giving me ample time to process and practice with the new stuff he was covering and offering clear, concise explanations when I didn't understand. He was encouraging and supportive and his thoughtful feedback helped to boost my confidence level in my ability to complete my project. Alex went out of his way to spend the extra time necessary with me in order for me to finish my project at the very last minute, working into the wee hours of the morning to make sure that I made my deadline. His dedication and willingness to help me succeed was unexpected and super duper appreciated, especially since he was charging a fraction of what others of his caliber and vetted status were asking. He will be the first and only person I ask for help next time that I need it.

Alex was 30 minutes late and was not fully engaged. Alex did help with one issue but I did not find him to be one of the the best of the Wyzant engineers. We ran from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm so the cost of lesson is wrong also.
