I have considerable experience tutoring and coaching students of all ages in writing, languages, English, grammar, and pretty much everything related to words, language, and grammar. The languages I have taught include Russian, Latin, Hebrew, and French, as well as English. I have taught creative writing, fiction, and poetry, and I have coached people writing their doctoral dissertations. I'm also a professional lexicographer and linguist, as well as a professional writer, editor, and translator. In addition, I'm a homeschooling mom, and as such, I teach homeschooling classes routinely, and these tend to include a wide range of ages.

I have taught in university settings, homeschool cooperatives, private living rooms, and one-on-one settings. Whatever the setting, I start by getting to know my students, their interests and needs, and their learning styles. Then, I base my teaching plans and curriculum on the individual students. I bring a lot of enthusiasm to whatever I teach.

I have an MA in Russian language and literature from Bryn Mawr College, where I also did my undergraduate degree in Russian. I was a Fulbright Scholar, and also did some graduate work in Linguistics at Cornell.

Approved Subjects

English

English

I have been teaching homeschooling classes in literature, writing, and grammar, among other subjects, for the last decade. In addition, I am a professional editor, writer, and lexicographer.
Grammar

Grammar

I am a professional editor, linguist, lexicographer, and writer. As such, I work with grammar every day. I have taught English grammar as well as Russian, Latin, and Hebrew grammar. I have even taught multilingual grammar classes.
Hebrew

Hebrew

I have been tutoring kids in Hebrew for the last two years. I have developed a new approach to this that teaches kids about language generally and at the same time helps them develop a strong understanding of the structure of Hebrew while gaining reading skills. This is particularly useful for nerdy/geeky kids who want to understand whatever they're doing and who are beginning to move towards a goal of becoming b'mitzvah.
Latin

Latin

I studied Latin for 5 years in junior high and high school, and then took one more semester of Latin literature in college. I have taught beginning Latin to homeschoolers. While many people question the relevance of Latin to their lives, I consider it the most practical thing I learned in school, as Latin helped me learn other languages that I use regularly and taught me to think about language.
Literature

Literature

I have loved literature since my earliest years. I have a two degree in Russian language and literature, and have taught literature classes to homeschoolers. In addition, I am a published poet and fiction writer.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have worked as an editor since my teen years. My experience in editing is extremely varied, including academic papers, dissertations, business documents, and books. While my editing is primarily developmental, content, language, and line editing, I do proofreading as well.
Reading

Reading

I have had the pleasure of guiding several students on their journey to reading. I was, of course, most intimately involved with my daughter's journey, which began in her infancy and included her developing her own methods to learn to read as a toddler. I have been teaching homeschooling classes for about ten years, during which I have helped several readers ranging from early readers who needed help learning to read aloud slowly enough that others could understand them to late readers who needed help and motivation to acquire fluency at an age when many peers were already confident reading. My techniques vary, depending on the student, but have included kinesthetic methods and readers' theater.
Russian

Russian

I have a B.A. And an M.A. in Russian. I am a near-native speaker, living with a native speaker (my husband of 24 years) with whom I converse in Russian routinely. I have taught Russian at both the college and high school level, and have tutored in Russian.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a professional lexicographer, I have worked on a variety of dictionaries, glossaries, and lexicons, including traditional print dictionaries and thesauruses, online dictionaries and glossaries, and computational lexicons. I worked as an associate editor on the American Heritage Dictionary, third edition, and I have worked as a consultant for Merriam Webster.
Writing

Writing

I have worked as an editor since my teen years. My experience in editing is extremely varied, including academic papers, dissertations, business documents, and books. I am also a published writer and a lexicographer. My writing includes poetry, fiction, and non-fiction.
