I am a Dartmouth College grad with 14 years of professional tutoring experience and outstanding student results. I've helped coach students to 300+ point improvements on the SAT, 5+ point improvements on the ACT and 25%+ improvements on the SSAT and ISEE. I have particular expertise with standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, SSAT and ISEE. I also tutor math and writing for middle school and high school students.
I am able to work with students in a variety of subjects, ages, and academic levels - from the student trying to break 1500 on the SAT to one trying to attain a perfect score, and from a student struggling in math class to one trying to score a 5 on the AP exam. The key is that while I work with students on general strategies, I am also able to pinpoint areas of strength and weakness specific to each individual child and work on improvement.
I was trained by and spent 5 years working for one of the major test prep companies. While working for that company, I earned a "Tutor of the Year" award and I was one of the most in-demand tutors for my excellent student results. Specifically, one of my students earned a perfect score on the SAT and I've helped coach several other students to perfect section scores.
Test success is based on knowing both strategy and content. I teach students strategies for how to tackle each section of the test and the content they'll need to know in order to excel. I also work with students on timing strategies so they neither run out of time nor rush during a section. I do assign weekly homework, as it is critical for students to practice the strategies they learn and feel comfortable with them so they will use them during the test.
Of the hundreds of students I have worked with over the years, most see score increases following tutoring (nearly all students if they are motivated to do well and practice the specific test strategies).
I have several references available. I would be happy to talk to you more about your student's goals and how I can help your child achieve them.

Kathryn is brilliant, patient and results oriented. We will be working with her for years. She helped our daughter score top stanines on the ISEE.
Great test taking tips and also content tutoring. She has helped to increase my SAT score. Very flexible willing to work around your schedule.
Kathy worked with our 13 year old son for about 4 months - once a week for an hour and a half - to prep for the ISEE. In the beginning our son was dreading the tutoring sessions but after working with Kathy he actually began to look forward to the sessions. She had a way of making the material interesting, challenging and fun for him. He actually said a number of times after she left -- "that was actually fun". The manner in which she dealt with him was spot on -- she gave him the tools to work through problems where he might have otherwise given up and she had a nurturing approach that made him feel good about himself. She instilled a confidence that he needed going into this test. Given he is a current 7th grader there was material on the test he had not learned in school yet and Kathy did a great job teaching him how to work through the problems and pick the best answer. In addition, she provided an outline and tools he could use when writing an essay. I would definitely recommend her to any of my friends with kids studying for exams or in need of writing tools. I am so happy we found her when we did because my son did really well on the ISEE and got in to his #1 choice for private school as an 8th grader.
Kathy is a tremendous tutor and person. She immediately made my daughter feel at ease, and very comfortable, which led to very productive sessions. My daughter saw a 210 point increase from her PSAT score to her SAT score! And, this was only based on a limited number of tutoring hours as we had a small window to work in. Kathy is calm and reassuring with her students and always gives them takeaways at the end of each session which helps them progress. I will recommend her to anybody! Kathy was easy to work with, responded to my questions in a very timely manner and was always on time for the lessons.
We owe my daughter's improvements to Kathy.
We have been very pleased with Kathy, as she has had a direct effect on our 16 year old's improving, strong results in math.
Kathy was a calm and reassuring presence during a high-stress time. She did a great job identifying the areas my son needed help in and gave him concrete advice on how to do better. She's very, very knowledgeable about both the ACT and the SAT. A pleasure to work with!
Kathryn did a good job preparing my daughter to her SAT exam. She has a well structured tutoring approach which considers individual needs as well as the general knowledge sharing. It was important for me to work not only on the academics, but also on the emotional readiness to the exam, and Kathy covered this aspect perfectly! Many thanks and good luck!
We are lucky to have found Kathy to tutor my daughter for ACT. Kathy is a very effective tutor. She helped my daughter get the scores that she wanted. We are all very happy!
Kathy helped my daughter to prepare for the SAT. She was professional and reliable. My daughter found her to be very patient. She explained problems clearly, quickly identified where help was needed most, and developed constructive strategies for success. I would have no hesitation in recommending Kathy!
Having Kathryn as my daughter's tutor worked out to be a great choice for us. Not only did my daughter's score go up 260 points, but after each session she was motivated and had so much more confidence on how she was going to approach the test.
Thanks again, Kathryn, for all your help!
Kathy tutored my son for his ACT and Math 2 subject test. She was extremely professional and reliable at all times and taught him the strategies and skills he needed to perform well on both - his results were excellent. She worked with him in a patient and calm manner and gave him the confidence that he could tackle even the most challenging problems. He felt extremely comfortable with her and really enjoyed working with her.
Kathryn is very professional and incredibly knowledgeable. Her feedback was right on when it came to the real tests. Scores ranged from 700-800 and 32-36 on individual sections, with a composite SAT score of 2290 and an ACT score of 35. It doesn't get much better than that!
Kathy was a fantastic fit for my daughter for SAT preparation. The individual attention was just what my daughter needed, a class would not have gotten us the same results. Kathy was very easy to work with, flexible, and motivating. My daughter looked forward to her tutoring sessions and her SAT scores improved considerably. I recommend this tutor.
Kathy was an exceptional tutor that helped our son improve both his ACT and SAT results improve in a short period of time. She was patient, thorough, bright, and intuitive, and immediately seemed to understand my son's positive attributes and what parts he needed to work on to improve his scores. He both enjoyed his time with Kathy and got great results, with higher scores on both ACT and SAT exams. We very highly recommend her!
Kathy's efforts directly resulted in a large improvement in our son's ACT scores. She developed a thorough plan and stuck to it. We highly recommend her.
Kathy was an excellent tutor. She quickly assessed my daughter's learning style and areas in need of improvement. Kathy primarily tutored my daughter in math preparation for the SSAT, but she also touched on the English sections and hints for the writing sample. Kathy's style instilled confidence in my daughter. She gave appropriate homework so that my daughter would be able to build her skills between sessions. My daughter's results on the SSAT were fantastic! She scored in the 96th percentile thanks to Kathy's tutoring.
Kathy tutored my daughter for the SAT exam and reviewed her college essay. Kathy is excellent to analyze her weak areas and came up the suggestions to improve. She is also very flexible with the tutoring needs and schedule. As result my daughter's SAT score is improved quite bit! I'm happy with her tutoring and results.
Kathy is a great tutor. She's reliable, punctual and effective. She worked with my daughter for several sessions between taking the ACT test the first and second time. My Daughter's scores improved significantly. I feel very happy my daughter now has more college options because of her hard work and Kathy's help. There is no question I would work with her again.
Kathy helped my son raise his ACT scores by 5 points in a matter of months. It was within 8 sessions that his scores went from respectable to amazing. We couldn't be happier. Kathy was a calming force that gave our son sound strategies and the confidence he needed to realize his true potential.
Kathryn has been extremely effective in helping our son learn techniques for deciphering the SAT exams. His practice scores have steadily and dramatically improved and he looks forward to his tutoring sessions.
Kathy tutored my son for the lower level ISEE and he was very happy with her. She was clear and organized. She challenged him and gave him homework assignments each week. He was very engaged and worked hard to meet her expectations.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I teach students the grammar issues they are tested on in the English section and provide them with a framework as to how to approach the questions. For the essay, we talk about the components of a good essay, how to argue a point, and how to provide the detailed, relevant examples to back up their point of view.
For ACT Math, I review with students the concepts they need to know for the test. We also discuss how to approach questions that they don't know how to do, using "backwards" strategies, learning how to make good estimations and eliminating answer choices.
ACT Reading is typically the section that students have the most difficulty with time-wise. I teach students a fast and efficient way to read passages and stay on track. I then teach them a method to attack the questions that is faster and more accurate than the way most students typically approach reading questions. I also frequently time students to make sure they are able to complete the section in the required amount of time.
Students often worry about the ACT Science section, but truth is, they don't need to study any science at all. I work with students on understanding that this section is basically reading comprehension using scientific experiments. The method I teach is similar to what I teach for the reading: quickly reading passages and understanding the main idea, and learning how to answer questions based solely on the information provided.
I have worked with middle school and high school students on algebra skills, including solving for a variable, working with multiple variables, factoring quadratics and more. My approach is to make sure students understand the fundamentals while providing them with a supportive atmosphere to facilitate learning.
I have worked with several students on advanced algebra concepts, both for classwork and for test prep. In particular, I have helped students with concepts such as matrices, functions and rational equations. I provide students with firm instruction, while also being supportive so that they can feel comfortable while making strides in learning.
I have worked with students from age 8 up through high school on elementary math skills, such as fractions, decimals, factors, multiples, and much more. I always make sure students have a firm grasp on the basics before moving on to more difficult concepts. I also make sure to explain math to students in a way that they understand the reasoning behind "why" we do certain things in math. This way they have an understanding beyond just plugging things into an equation.
I have worked with students from grade school to high school on English - both reading and writing. For reading, I teach effective ways to read and tackle comprehension questions. For writing, I work with students on how they can effectively make an argument and develop an essay that is both engaging and easy to understand. I have 18 years of professional experience as a writer (in addition to my tutoring experience), and am able to coach students on ways to write in an effective and concise manner, while still adding their personal "voice" to a paper.
I have tutored several students academically in geometry. I am able to work with them on proofs, theorems, and both plane and coordinate geometry. I teach students about both the general concepts and diligence to the details in a fun and supportive environment.
The ISEE is a test for admission to private schools. There are three levels (Lower, Middle and Upper), and each exam tests reading, verbal, writing and math skills. I have been tutoring students in the ISEE for nearly 11 years and have helped them achieve excellent results to include with their school applications.
For PSAT prep, I help students understand exactly what will be on the test, and I work with them on strategies for each section of the test. I am able to work with students, whether they are just taking the PSAT as a "test run" for the SAT or whether they are taking it in hopes of winning a National Merit scholarship.
I have worked with students from grade school through high school on better, more effective ways to read, and the best ways to approach reading comprehension questions. I talk with students about how to determine main idea and author's purpose and tone. We also discuss how to handle detail and inference questions. I am an avid reader myself and love to nurture an appreciation for reading in my students.
I teach students that SAT Math is not like classroom math. While classroom math rewards students for doing problems the "right" way, for SAT Math, it's not about how you get there, just that you get the right answer. While we review the important concepts for the test, I teach students more about how to tackle problems they don't know by using alternate strategies. I also teach them about doing problems in a faster way even if they were getting them right in the first place so that they have time for harder questions.
For SAT Reading, I teach students a reliable method to tackle sentence completions. I also teach them a method for reading comprehension -- how to read passages and how to handle the questions without confusing themselves.
The multiple-choice section in the SAT Writing tests a short list of grammatical issues. I review those issues with students and teach them how to spot the issues in questions. For the essay, we discuss what goes into a good essay, what students can do to make the readers' jobs easier, and small changes students can make to turn a "good" essay into an excellent one.
I have been tutoring for the SSAT for more than 10 years. In addition to tutoring students one-on-one, I have also taught an SSAT class for 20 students each fall since 2011. I help students with both strategy and understanding the important concepts they will need to know for the test.
I work with students on understanding trigonometric concepts for both math and physics classes. I also work with students on trigonometry for standardized tests, such as the ACT and SAT 2. My focus is on overall understanding and knowing how to apply concepts rather than on simply memorizing equations.
I work with students on increasing their vocabulary knowledge through flashcards (and teach them how to make the right kind of flashcard). I also teach students how to decipher meanings of words through word roots, word context, foreign language knowledge, and more.
I am able to help students with essay writing, in terms of developing a thesis, organizing information and providing reasoning and examples for points. I have detailed knowledge of SAT / ACT / SSAT / ISEE essay prompts, but can also help students develop essays for school. I also provide support for college application essays, helping students determine appropriate topics to write about and working with them on polishing essays.
