Hello! My name is Ryan Song, and I graduated from Boston University Academy in May 2026. Thanks to the dual-enrollment program with Boston University, I have also taken several college-level classes there. Some of these classes include biology, a personal finance class, and two college sophomore-year-level calculus-based physics courses. On my SAT, my highest math and reading scores were 790 and 760, respectively. Cornell University accepted me, and I will start attending there in the fall of 2026.
I have been a tutor in geometry, precalculus, and Latin for high schoolers, and have also taught swimming to children ages 3-12. I taught them during the school year while also juggling my own homework. When I tutor someone, I prefer using practice exercises and applications over lectures, along with demonstrations and guided exercises. Exercises can include practice questions from myself, a textbook, or online material like Khan Academy. I also like to employ guided practice, where I work side by side with a student and complete an example with them after they try it themselves. These methods allow my student and me to see their strengths and weaknesses, and apply the techniques they learn in class. I have also used these approaches for test and quiz preparation with great success in my college and high school classes. When possible, I assist my students with homework or review past exams to help them improve in difficult or new material.
While there were many differences between my high school and college classes, I noticed that in both cases, the teachers could influence how well a student did. This was more than whether a teaching style fit a student, but it was a teacher's personality and attitude towards the students. The more engaged and friendly the teacher was to their students, the better the students did. This philosophy has remained with me to this day, and I want to ensure that students receive the help they need as best as possible.
