I am a licensed math teacher with experience in elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. I have experience teaching middle school science and a variety of computer courses at the high school and post-secondary level (including programming, networking, and operating systems). I have experience tutoring elementary, middle school and high school students in math and science and college students with math, physics and computer topics. I also have experience preparing students for standardized tests, including the MCAS (multiple grades), SSAT, SAT, MTEL, and the GRE. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C

I have completed college programming courses using C and developed C programs to code and decode image data. I have experience teaching C at the post-secondary level. I have created proprietary C programs for performing statistical analysis and have C resources I can use to help students learn the C programming language.

C#

I am am experienced programmer in C, C++, and C#. I have experience as a editor-reviewer for courseware developed for post-secondary education, providing expert reviewer services to check for C#-topic accuracy, and can provide C# expertise to present C# topics to students, assist with projects, and provide C# resources for students that wish to become proficient with C#.

C++

I am am experienced programmer in C, C++, and C#. I have experience as and Adjunct instructor in C and C++; I'm currently editing educational materials for programming in C#. I have prepared materials to introduce students to programming and can help students set up a programming environment.

COBOL

I have completed college programming courses using COBOL and have more than a year of experience using COBOL. When I worked for UNISYS I was a lead programmer on a project for the Government Services Administration that used COBOL and third-generation programming tools built around COBOL. I conducted training for programmers and mangers how to use the tools and to integrate generated COBOL programs with customized code.

Computer Programming

I have been a programmer most of my life, with years of mainframe experience in Pascal, PL/1, COBOL, assembly, C, and a bit of ALGOL; I have 10+ years experience developing desktop applications and web-based applications using C, C++, C#, Javascript, Visual Basic, VBA, perl, python, PHP, BASIC, Java. Additionally, I have taught programming courses at high school and post-secondary levels. I can help set up programming environments so students can explore programming and follow some of the great examples that are available on the Internet.

Computer Science

I have a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Masters degree in Information Systems from American University in Washington D.C. I have twenty+ years experience learning, using, and teaching topics in computer science. Experience includes programming and systems administration and web development. I have taught computer courses at the post-secondary level and provided services as an expert-content reviewer for courses in programming, networking, systems analysis and design, and security. I have resources to help students with almost any computer science related topic.

Discrete Math

I have taught semester courses in Discrete Mathematics at the high school level and have taken two courses through Tufts University on teaching Discrete Mathematics. I have attended the Discrete Mathematics annual conferences many times that are put on by Tufts, Boston College, Rutgers, and Rhode Island. I have a good collection of discrete mathematics materials and manipulatives.

DOS

My computer experience dates back to the pre-windows days and has included creating batch programs to accomplish tasks ever since. I have taught students DOS and connected those commands with UNIX/Linux. DOS experience also includes a variety of command prompt shells and more powerful non-windows-based shells. I have DOS resources to help students learn DOS.

Elementary Math

I have experience as a middle school and high school teacher. I have worked as a math teacher at an Elementary School in Randolph, MA. I have just completed writing a book on Common Core Mathematics.

Fortran

My first experience with Fortran was with Fortran IV and was one of the first programming languages I learned. I have helped students with Fortran 77 and Fortran 95 projects. I can provide Fortran resources, assistance with specific topics, or tutorials.

ISEE

As a licensed teacher on Massachusetts I have passed the Communications and Literacy test, which provides me with a general credential for tutoring reading and writing. As a math teacher I have passed the middle school math test, the high school math test, and the middle school math and science test. I have experience tutoring students to prepare them to take the ISEE and SSAT tests and have resources to assist students with all parts of the ISEE.

JavaScript

I am an experienced programmer using JavaScript. I've created educational applications to help students in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, discrete mathematics, trigonometry, and statistics. I can introduce students to programming using JavaScript and how to make web pages interactive. I have experience teaching a variety of computer courses at the high school and post-secondary level (including programming, networking, and operating systems).

Linear Algebra

I am a licensed high school math teacher and have taught Algebra I. Parents have posted requests for help in linear algebra topics that are covered in Algebra I classes. I have resources available to help students will all aspects of solving linear equations, graphing linear equations; Some of the posted requests for linear algebra help are at the high school level and not the linear algebra content that could be found at the college level. My main focus is to help secondary school students be successful in math. Parents looking for a tutor in linear algebra may be looking for Algebra I or Algebra II help, and not the Linear Algebra courses at the college level.

Linux

I have UNIX training that provided me the background to apply to the Linux environment. I have many years experience with the Linux operating systems to support internal corporate environments as well as internet-web-based services. I have experience with many flavors/versions of the Linux operating system on many hardware platforms. I can help students learn the Linux operating systems as well as many command-line shells for scripting.

Oracle

I have 10+ years experience installing Oracle software, creating, maintaining, and monitoring Oracle databases. I have experience supporting Oracle back-end database servers to web-based front end servers as well as maintaining Oracle database that support other high-end software products (such as Lawson). I created Oracle database replication for Starwoods Hotels and maintained online services using Oracle for Scientific American Medicine (and subsequently WebMD). I am able to help students learn SQL, PL/SQL and to provide administration and monitoring of Oracle databases.

Pascal

Most programming courses taught at the University of Maryland were taught (at the time) using Pascal where I became an expert. My first job out of college was as a programmer where I used Pascal and mentored other programmers in using Pascal.

Perl

I have more than 5 years of programming using Perl and maintaining multi-tiered web-based systems using Perl as the primary CGI programming language.

UNIX

I completed graduate level course work on the UNIX operating system; I have been a shell programmer, system administrator, systems manager, internet developer on UNIX platforms, mentored and trained system administrators, and have taught the UNIX operating system to students at ITT Tech. I have more than a decade of supporting web sites using the UNIX operating system including Solaris, Linux, IRIX, AIX, Red Hat and others.

Visual Basic

I have expert level experience with Visual Basic for Applications, have deployed math-based products developed in Visual Basic, and have taught programming courses at ITT Tech using Visual Basic. I have also tutored high school students that were taking Visual Basic programming through the Virtual High School.

Web Design

I have experience as a web developer both front-end and back-end design. Technologies that I have taught at the high school level include HTML, Javascript, CSS. Back end tools include, but are not limited to perl, c++, python, php, and commercial e-commerce packages using many difference web servers. I have expert level system administration skills.
