My background is in biotech research and engineering, so my approach to science isn't just theory out of book, it's something I have worked with directly. I don't just help students solve homework problems, I teach them what is important and why.

I have worked with all kinds of students, across different levels and learning styles, different goals and relationships with school. Some students need someone to break down concepts from the ground up. Others need a different explanation than the one they got in class. I'm patient, encouraging students to ask questions, and they feel comfortable telling me when they are confused.

I also have formal experience coaching study and organizational skills coaching — I spent a year working at UT Austin's Sanger Learning Center, helping students with study strategies, time management, and test-taking. These skills come up with almost every student I work with, regardless of subject.

I genuinely enjoy working with my students — getting to know how they think, building confidence, watching them achieve their goals.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I've tutored algebra for over 10 years, working with a wide range of students from those who are struggling, to those aiming for top grades. Algebra is the foundation of mathematics, essential for science classes, and the core of the SAT Math section, so it is important that students understand “why” and not just “what” to do. Algebra builds on itself, so gaps in understanding tend to compound. Rather than simply blowing through homework problems, I focus on the root of a student’s confusion to ensure they are set up for the future.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Biology

Biology

I studied neurobiology and have spent my career in biological research, so this material is real for me, and a personal passion. Unlike chemistry, which is very math-intensive and can be learned by relying heavily on repetition and practice, many students struggle with the memorization required in biology, finding themselves staring at lecture slides with no improvement. As a biology major in undergrad, I am more than familiar with this struggle, and focus on effective study techniques. I talk through concepts and ask the students to explain them themselves, which moves their studying from passive to active.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Chemistry is one of the subjects I know best — both from my M.S. in Chemical Engineering, years of tutoring, and time in the lab (especially for stoichiometry and solutions!). I explain material and work through practice problems, but my greatest strength is gauging where the student is at, and meeting them there. Some students need a concept broken down from scratch; others need targeted practice and repetition.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

I am a scientist and engineer in the biotech industry and have been tutoring for over 10 years, specializing in algebra, test prep, study and organizational skills, biology, and chemistry. What I love about organic chemistry is its visual nature and similarity to mathematics. Like math, it can be really challenging to grasp the concepts but often brute force memorization just doesn't do the trick. If a student can get past the hump of understanding the fundamentals, organic chemistry becomes like a puzzle: using the rules you've learned to work step by step to solutions. Students often feel really overwhelmed and intimidated by organic chemistry, which is important to empathize with as a tutor. I approach every session with focus on making them as comfortable as possible and discovering the learning methods that work best for them.
PSAT

PSAT

I recently helped a student improve their score from 1020 to 1180 in just a few months, with a particularly strong improvement on the reading and writing section. For students aiming for the National Merit scholarship, starting PSAT prep early matters, given the comprehensive nature of the test, and the benefits last beyond test day — the SAT is nearly identical to the PSAT, but with a higher density of medium and hard questions.
SAT Math

SAT Math

My quantitative background is strong — on the GRE (an advanced version of the SAT for graduate school) I scored 169/170 (96th percentile), and I obtained an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Columbia University. For SAT Math, the subject-matter is extensive and the time allotted is short, so students benefit most from a combination of material review, drilling practice problems, and learning test-taking time management.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

When I took the GRE (an advanced version of the SAT used for graduate school admissions), I scored a 164/170 (94th percentile) on the verbal section. The SAT Reading/Writing section is at first glance difficult to study, but with the right strategy students can increase their score. Many students are intimidated by the grammar questions, so I teach them the “why” so they can move beyond just choosing what “sounds right.” There are clear patterns in the kinds of questions asked on the Reading section, so I help students identify these “types” and streamline their problem-solving.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I spent a year as a Peer Academic Coach at UT Austin's Sanger Learning Center, working one-on-one with students on studying, time-management, organization, and test-taking strategy. The importance of these skills are often overlooked, and with relatively minor changes, students can see huge improvement in retention after class, study efficiency, test scores, and confidence overall.

Outstanding chemistry tutor

Rose has been a huge asset for my high school junior! She immediately understands what he’s working on and has been especially helpful preparing him for tests. She is kind, patient and knowledgeable—an excellent tutor!

Very good at explaining

Rose tutored my daughter in chemistry and she did a really good job at explaining concepts that my daughter has found challenging. She felt a lot better about her understanding and grasp of material. My daughter was able to retake a chemistry test after her tutoring session and went from a 13/20 to an 18/20!!
