When I meet with my students, I take the time to understand what their goals and/or challenges are, and then put together customized individual plans that help them achieve success.

I worked for over 35 years in industry in various technical and managerial roles, but I always enjoyed the training/tutoring positions the most.

Tutoring with Excel is most effective when it includes discussions of Excel theory, hand-on activities, short demonstrations of best practices, techniques, and continually reviewing keyboard shortcuts and general tips.

As with many modern software applications, there are several methods that one can use to reach a desired result. Often, remembering what technique one used in the past gets lost in your (human) memory, so what I do that's unique is show my students how to build and maintain a library containing "Bookmarks of Knowledge," that can really help.

Tutoring involves carefully and closely listening to what the student is trying to accomplished and/or where they are struggling, and then putting together learning plans to effectively and expeditiously reach their goals or get past their struggles. Just as each student is different and their goals are unique, so are their learning plans. While one student needs to understand mostly theory, another may need more hands-on activities.
