At the end of June, my daughter told me that she wanted to take AP Calculus during her upcoming senior year. To do this, she needed to cover the Pre Calculus course material over the summer and pass a placement exam in August.
When I first talked with Ellen about this, she assured me that she could help. She did more than just help. Ellen and my daughter mapped out the summer schedule based on a candid skills assessment, the material that needed to be covered and my daughter’s comfort level with the process. Their sessions were well planned, focused and purposeful. Together, they made a great team.
I expect a tutor to have mastery of the subject matter. And Ellen certainly did. What I was most impressed with was Ellen’s ability to quickly create and consistently maintain a strong working rapport with a young woman whom she had just met. That was amazing!
And, yes, my daughter sailed through the placement exam as Ellen assured her she would.
Ellen was very thorough gathering information about the student and covered a lot of material during the first lesson. She offered different options about how to tackle a problem and guided the student to see how much he knew before offering help.
Ellen was a great fit for my 17 year old son. He was close to failing pre-calculus when he started working with Ellen. She set reasonable expectations and was great about making him feel pleased with his progress which was slow at first. Ellen was incredibly flexible as we dealt with the changing and demanding schedule of a high school senior and many snow storms. Ellen was a much better teacher than my son's classroom teacher. I highly recommend her services - she was such a find!
Ellen has been helping my son in honors geometry and also helping him organize his work and homework for the week. She is very patient and she is very dependable. He is lucky to have such a nice and helpful tutor as Ellen.
Ellen has been amazing. She is always patient and very knowledgeable. We would not want to face pre- cal without her!!
Ellen tutored my son in algebra and geometry so that he could move up between freshman and sophomore years from advanced college prep to honors level courses as well as continues to tutor him for his honors class. He successfully passed the test to move into honors level courses (involved learning significant material that had not been covered in his class) as well as got an A- in his honors class this last term. Ellen is very patient and balances pushing my son not to give up so easily with encouraging him to ask questions when he is uncertain. As a result of Ellen's tutoring, he has really gained a much deeper understanding of the material and gained confidence in his own abilities. He would not have been able to do it without Ellen's tutoring and encouragement.
Ellen recently began tutoring my daughter Zoe, who was having trouble with her pre-calculus class as a high school senior. Ellen quickly got down to business, identifying Zoe's problem areas and knowledge gaps, and in a manner that Zoe describes as "really clear" began to address her difficulties. She has been able to communicate about math to Zoe like no one ever has, and the results have been "really clear": From having gotten D's on her first few quizzes and a test, Zoe has now gotten B's on two quizzes, and then received a 97 (A) on her most recent test. Now, it's only the end of October and there is a lot more math left in the school year, but we are confident that with Ellen's gentle, patient but extremely adept teaching style, Zoe will continue to thrive this year in pre-calculus.
My son feels Ellen is very helpful and that she knows her stuff. She provided valuable feedback to our son and to us, his parents. Thank you.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

For Commonwealth Learning Center, I worked with students with severe learning issues in Reading and Writing using specialized programs such as Nanci Bell VV.
I have successfully helped many students taking the ISEE to get scores required for their choice of private schools in my 15 years as an independent tutor. I am qualified in SSAT, a similar test. I am certified in Math in Mass., and am qualified for SAT & ACT Math, English and Writing, all similar or higher level to the ISEE.
I have tutored middle and high school students for 14 years overwhelmed by or uninterested in homework and/or studying for and taking tests and provided them with methods, strategies, and skills to address issues of time management, organization, studying habits, note taking, effective reading and test taking.
