About Kara

I have years of experience as both an ESL instructor and as a librarian and hold masters in TESOL and Library Science. I have taught ESL/EFL to students of all ages and abilities, from young children to older adults. I am certified in ESL (K-12) and Library Science (K-12). I have taught ESL/EFL at a public school and at language schools(corporate and community), community colleges and universities in the United States, Japan, and Spain. I also have experience as a language lab coordinator for a number of years at a college, having teachers and students integrate technology into language learning. As for my experience as a librarian, I have mainly worked as a school librarian in the K-6 setting but also some at a public library.

I would welcome the opportunity to tutor students in ESL at all levels and ages. I would consider tutoring students in other subjects as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Masters in TESOL and am certified K-12 in MA. I have taught ESL in a public elementary school and have taught young children in Spain and Japan too. I have had experience teaching at language and community education schools, community colleges, and universities in MA and in WA, Japan and in Spain. I worked as an ESL Visiting Professor for 2 years at a university in Japan and prior to that had been a university student there. In college my major was East Asian studies with a focus on Japanese language and culture. I lived with a Japanese homestay family for 10 months in Kyoto while attending a special program at a university there. In addition to studying Japanese, I have also been a language learner in French and Spanish. I would welcome the opportunity to teach ESL to students of all ages and abilities. I do not follow one teaching method but draw upon my experience to create a course students that meets their needs.
