Bio

I earned my PhD in Mathematics from Brown University and after an earlier career as a professor I have spent more than 20 years applying mathematics, statistics, and quantitative methods to real-world problems in finance and risk management. I love mathematics, but just as importantly, I enjoy explaining it clearly and helping students get to the point where a difficult concept suddenly makes sense.

My approach to tutoring mathematics is focused on understanding rather than memorization. Derivatives, integrals, limits, optimization - all topics, even those more advanced or simpler than these - become much easier when you understand what the mathematics is actually doing and why the techniques work. I try to build that intuition first, then connect it to the equations and problem-solving methods students need for homework and exams.

I can help with high school and college calculus, as well as other classes ranging from mid-level high school mathematics through advanced college topics.

Every student is different, so I adapt the lesson to what you need. We can work carefully through a topic from the beginning, diagnose where you're getting stuck, prepare for an upcoming exam, or tackle challenging problems together. My goal isn't simply to get you through the next problem - it’s to help you develop enough understanding and confidence that you can solve the next one on your own.

While I'm not new to tutoring I am new to the site and am discounting my initial online rates to build up my portfolio of reviews. I won't raise rates on existing students as I raise my rates up to fair market levels once I've started to attract students.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I am an award-winning former math professor who simply...loves teaching math. I have over ten years' experience as a professor and tutor for students at all levels of mathematics and all levels of ability. Understanding mathematics deeply helps me explain things in a way that works for each student (everyone is different!) and helps them fill in gaps in their understanding and intuition.
Calculus

Calculus

I've taught Calculus in settings from 500 person lectures down to 1:1 tutoring/drop in sessions. I enjoy helping students develop their intuition and confidence, not just teaching them how to do problems by rote.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I've been a professor and tutor for more than ten years, teaching in formats as diverse as 500-person lectures to drop-in 1:1 tutoring
Precalculus

Precalculus

I've taught Precalculus 1:1 in tutoring/drop in sessions for years. I enjoy helping students develop their intuition and confidence, not just teaching them how to do problems by rote.
Probability

Probability

I'm a former professor who has won awards at teaching and research. These days I work in mathematican finance, and use probability almost daily. I love teaching this subject because it's such a "once it makes sense, it's all common sense" topic - it's both fun (and very satisfying) to watch students work problems once they understand it.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I've taught Trigonometry 1:1 in tutoring/drop in sessions for years. I enjoy helping students develop their intuition and confidence, not just teaching them how to do problems by rote.
