I am a retired genetic engineer, having worked in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry all my professional career. I have a solid background in the biomedical sciences (PhD in Physiology-Biophysics, Two MS degrees in Microbiology and in Biological Sciences, and a BS in both Biology and Chemistry). Because of my experience teaching in college adjunct positions and in private tutoring, I have learned how important it is not just to help students learn the basics, but students also need to learn how to process the information they have learned, and be able to apply the information to their daily tasks (e.g., in a job for a nurse, what does this EKG tell me about this patient's heart and what is my next step in handling a situation). The application approach helps students demonstrate how much they have learned and how to utilize their own creativity. As a teacher, I encourage students to use their mind; not to just regurgitate the answers, but to think, and synthesize before they answer - to understand the process. I like to engage the students, making learning for them an enjoyable experience. I encourage communication and constant feedbacks, not just from the students, but also from the parents so I can adjust my lesson plan accordingly, benefiting the student is my ultimate goal.

I have a broad experience in teaching/tutoring as briefly described below: I have tutored 1) algebra and geometry to high school students in their preparations for the SAT, and 2) Chinese to young children and adults. I also have taught college level classes in many different subjects (e.g., human anatomy and physiology, genetics, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry…etc.). Furthermore, on a bigger scale, I organized and started a new genetic engineering college level course for Moravian College and also taught an immunology class at Lehigh University. In addition to teaching, I have provided exam questions for the MCAT and prepared excerpts/summaries from medical journal articles for pharmaceutical corp

Chinese

Chinese

I was born in the Republic of China, came to the US when I was a teenager. I have taught Chinese to students ranging from 4 years old to adults in both classroom settings or 1:1 private settings. Depending on the goals of the students (i.e., daily conversations , composition in writings...etc), the teaching material/curriculum is assembled accordingly (with the student's approval). I have so far been successful with this approach.
Genetics

Genetics

I am a recently retired genetic engineer (PhD) with a solid background in Mendelian genetics, chromosomal genetics and molecular genetics (plus other areas such as immunology, pharmacology, physiology, tumor biology…etc). Other than working in the field of drug discovery, I have been actively involved in teaching (have taught general genetics, human genetics, molecular genetics and population genetics in colleges and universities); thus I am very familiar with genetics topics.
MCAT

MCAT

I have a PHD in Physiology and Biophysics with many years of experience in teaching (anatomy and physiology, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, cell physiology, pathophysiology, immunology, genetics, genetic engineering, pharmacology, microbiology...etc.). involved in biomedical research and drug discovery my entire professional career. I have provided examination questions for MCAT for many years.
Pharmacology

Pharmacology

I have studied and used pharmacology for my entire professional career, i.e., in drug discovery/development in big pharma. Briefly, I developed mimetics for various health-related conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, various autoimmune diseases, and hemophilia. For each drug lead, whether it was an agonist or antagonist or inverse agonist, an extensive pharmacokinetics (PK) profile (including affinity, efficacy, potency and ADME, i.e., absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) was obtained, followed by pharmacodynamics studies (PD) in clinical trial patients. PD basically can be viewed as what the drug does to the body.

Knowledgeable Tutor and Kind

Told me a lot about graphs and was very detailed with the information. Told me about the general formula for a parable. Also told me about quadratic equations with roots and told me to memorized all the four examples.

Great first session

Ku-chuan met with my son for a first session and it went very well. My son felt that he was very helpful with having him work through Algebra problems. I look forward to future sessions during the school year.

Excellent Tutor

Ku-chuan has a practical approach to SAT tutoring which is refreshing! He takes the time to understand where the student is coming from academically and based on that puts together a tutoring plan.

knowledgeable and patient

Dr. Ku-chuan is knowledgable and patient. He tried to establish a baseline for the student and then will try to establish a progression plan accordingly. He has prior experience of home schooling his own children, and tutoring school, and college level students.
