Hi, I'm Rachel! I work with students from third grade all the way to graduate level, in a wide variety of English and related subjects. These include reading comprehension, academic and creative writing, grammar, APA and MLA citation styles, college essays, test prep, and more. Whether you're looking to improve your ELA classwork, prep for standardized testing, build your writing skills for other classes, or anything else, I can help!

I began working as a peer tutor while studying English writing, literature, and education at Westfield State University. I studied general and English-specific teaching pedagogy, and spent time teaching in the classroom. I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in English Literature in 2022, as a member of the Commonwealth Honors Program and the International English Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta. In other words, I enjoyed and prided myself on succeeding in everything I did. I then began working for Tutor.com in 2024 and have maintained a 5-star rating with over 500 reviews across my entire range of grade levels and subjects. Outside of tutoring, I also have experience as a published poet and a staff member (in several positions, including Editor in-Chief) for both professional and academic literary journals.

To me, tutoring is not just about memorizing a list of skills and techniques to improve. Instead, I focus on building a personal relationship with every student, to make sure I'm teaching in a way that best suits how they learn. I also love working with my students to shape lessons and assignments together, according to their interests. These strategies ensure my students feel both comfortable and excited to explore, and often lead to students finding real enjoyment in their ELA work, even if it didn't start as their easiest or favorite subject. A fun session for you is a fun session for me, so I approach each one with creativity, approachability, and--when needed--a little silliness.

If my style matches what you're looking for, I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved Subjects

Common Core

Common Core

I studied lesson and unit planning to Common Core and Massachusetts state standards in university, including time spent executing those plans in-classroom, so I am well-versed in the ELA skills we look for at different age levels and how to get students there. In my online tutoring work, I've also helped students across the country and abroad build skills in Common Core topics and their own state standards. I've also conducted test prep for many of these state-specific tests, from elementary through high school, so I have a firm understanding of the formats as well as the content. Though all standards are a little different, I have a wealth of of advice for success across the board, and I'm always ready to dive into specific standards to align with exactly what my students are looking for.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

My poetry has been published in venues, including the 2024 Central Avenue Poetry Prize, OpenDoor Magazine, and the 2024 International English Honors Society Convention. I served as Staff Editor (1 year), Head Poetry Editor (2 years) and co-Editor in Chief (1 year) for Westfield State University's literary journal, Persona, and now continue to volunteer with Bi Women Quarterly. While in university, my coursework included Creative Writing, Writing Poetry, and Advanced Poetry Chapbook Writing, and my senior project was an original monologue play. While I am still working on getting my prose published, I have spent years writing, revising, and editing a variety of prose projects and dedicate myself to studying the craft of creative writing.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

In my work with Tutor.com, I specialize in helping students plan, develop, and review their academic writing projects. I have worked with students on third grade informational essays, high school literary analyses, undergrad rhetorical speeches, graduate research papers, and everything in between. I help students at all stages in the writing process by reviewing the higher-level aspects of essays, offering feedback from thesis, to idea development, to structure, to citations, to grammar, as well as the lower-order concerns, offering line-by-line comments/proofreading.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

Though not yet published, I have written several novels in genres such as teen fiction, supernatural thriller, and--most notably--fantasy. Alongside my lifelong experience writing, my university coursework included formal Creative Writing instruction, and classwork on how to teach Creative Writing. I also consider myself a forever-student, as I regularly study books and lessons on the craft of writing. From these three facets of experience, I have accumulated a vast amount of practical knowledge I can pass on to you.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

As a writing tutor, I've helped numerous students prepare scholarship and college essays. One of my specialties is helping students craft pieces to tight word counts which still show off their skills and personality to the max. These personal statements are challenging and high-stakes, so getting assistance from a tutor experienced in this genre, like myself, can help students build confidence and have their best shot at success.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Over the years, I've given a variety of presentations and performances across genres and topics, from creative writing open-mics, to Shakespeare competitions, to research reports, to analytical roundtables, and more. Some have been close to home with my familiar teachers and classmates, while others have been to rooms of strangers at an international venue. I believe that successful public speaking and presentation of any kind is built from two things: thorough prepwork and a sense of confidence. Together, I can help you plan the best possible presentation and help you feel confident when you step up to the mic.
