About Caryn

My name is Caryn. I have been a teacher for 20 years. I have experience which ranges from pre-school through 6th grade. For 16 years I worked for the same school district. Most of my time has been in second grade and kindergarten.

As an early childhood teacher, I love picture books and supporting and I use stories for finding letters and words and for listening for sounds. I use songs and movements for phonics, and trained in various systematic phonics and reading assessments. I am currently enrolled in an Orton-Gillingham course.

I would love to share my knowledge and experience with other children, while supporting them in maintaining or further developing fundamental skills. I'm also available for homework help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I am trained in Orton-Gillingham, as well as other phonics and language based programs. I am currently servicing students with Dyslexia. I have 3 years experience with Orton-Gillingham and 22 years experience teaching.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught reading and phonics for grades K-3 for 16 years. My reading instruction focuses on phonics and comprehension skills based on ability levels. I am trained to use appropriate assessments such as DIBELS and DRA.

Handwriting

As a kindergarten teacher, I have taught handwriting to all of my students. When each new letter is introduced, how to form each letter is specifically and systematically taught. I have worked closely with occupational therapy staff with formation and spacing, as well as many other ideas and suggestions. This assistance has helped both general education and special education students.

Phonics

As a kindergarten teacher, the main objective — especially in the first half of the year — is to focus on letter and sound identification, as well as listening for sounds in words. Having this fluency early on serves as an indicator and foundation for developing reading and writing skills over time. I have been trained in the phonics programs Telian and DiBELS, which include phonemic awareness, phonics, and reading fluency assessment. I have been trained by BSRI (Bay State Reading Institute). I am currently enrolled in an Orton Gillingham training program.

Speech

I am trained in several speech and language based programs. They include, Telian-Lively Letters. Both programs teach letter sounds and speech sound production. I am currently servicing students with Dyslexia. I have experience with Visualizing and Verbalizing Language Program. I have 22 years experience teaching.

Reading

Caryn has helped my son with getting caught up for 1st grade reading. He has ADHD and it's hard for him to focus at home. He has fallen behind and needed some extra help. She is very professional, kind and Tanner has really benefited from her help.
