I am a 2009 graduate of Dartmouth College with over a decade of tutoring experience. I have tutored steadily since the age of 13 when I began holding after-school sessions with a few of my peers in algebra. Upon arriving at Dartmouth, I immediately began working with a program called America Reads that places college students in low-income school districts as teachers' aides. While working with America Reads, I gained experience working with elementary-aged children and kids with developmental disabilities.

After receiving my BA, I started SAT tutoring for a small company in Connecticut. With this company I prepared high school students for the SAT I and subject tests including Math II and Biology, even writing the SAT II Biology teaching curriculum for the company. I have a B.A. in Music and am preparing to begin a PhD in Historical Musicology hopefully in the next 3 years. I am qualified to teach high school math, biology, and physics as well as history (American and European), music theory, grammar, English, and introductory German.

I think what sets me apart from other tutors is that I am adaptable in my teaching methods. I genuinely care about seeing my students do well, and I empathize with their hard work; after all, it was not so long ago that I was in their own shoes. So if I see one approach to a topic not working, I can switch gears easily to adapt. Also, I think my enthusiasm tends to show through pretty blatantly, which my students appreciate.

In recent years I have begun working more with high school aged students with IEPs; as a teacher, I personally love the challenge many of these students present, and my students have seen strong results. I am currently available and accepting new students for the Summer/Fall 2013 seasons.

Approved Subjects

ACT Science

ACT Science

I have twenty years tutoring experience and six years ACT specific experience. Previous students have ended up with extremely high scores and at schools such as Villanova, Tufts, Hobart William Smith (for architecture), and others.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra was the first academic subject I tutored regularly in. When I was in 8th grade, I noticed that my peers in algebra were having difficulties that I didn't have. Once in a while I'd stay after school and help people who asked for it, and this soon turned into a regular after-school tutoring program. To this day, algebra is one of my favorite subjects to work in, and I find myself coming back to it with various students.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have nearly two decades of algebra tutoring experience beginning when I ran after school tutoring sessions for my own peers in class. Since then, I have tutored it consistently across multiple school systems and curricula including public, private, and online formats. Students have been successful with added enrichment, support during the school year, and remedial summer support.
Biology

Biology

I have been tutoring biology since I studied it in high school and college myself. I have experience in AP level Biology, anatomy and physiology, and the requisite chemistry as well.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I possess over 15 years of college counseling experience. I offer full-service counseling, from developing a sensible college list, identifying strengths and mitigating weaknesses on an application, essay writing support, navigating accommodations offices, and everything in between. Former students have ended up at both highly selective schools such as Harvard, Cornell, or MIT to specialized programs to schools that cater to their specific needs (Agnes Scott, Hofstra's PALS program, state school systems)
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored all ages since the time I was 13. I served as a tutor with the America Reads Program in college in rural Vermont working with a small elementary school. I both helped run the after-school program and served in the classroom as a teacher's aide. I have experience working with learning disabilities and differently-abled students as well as students as young as kindergarteners.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Math was the first academic subject I tutored regularly in. When I was in 8th grade, I noticed that my peers in algebra were having difficulties that I didn't have. Once in a while I'd stay after school and help people who asked for it, and this soon turned into a regular after-school tutoring program. To this day, math is one of my favorite subjects to work in, and I have been fortunate enough to teach it consistently at all levels.
English

English

I pride myself on my perfect grammar. Before taking on tutoring full-time, I spent three years in MIT's writing program, where my department focused on process writing and editing.
GED

GED

I have over fifteen years of tutoring experience from ages 8-adult. I have taught the GED successfully in the past and, as a full-time tutor, am current on high school curriculum and methodology. I am a versatile teacher, capable of adjusting styles to fit individual students' needs and learning styles.
General Music

General Music

I received my BA in Music from Dartmouth College in 2009 with concentrations in composition and historical musicology and private study in voice and viola. Since then, I have been an active member of the Boston music community as a member of a renowned chorus and occasional chorus as well as the founder of two area bands. In addition, I have participated in various local musical theatre productions as an actor, pit musician, and music director. I read treble, bass, alto clefs, white and black mensural notation, and I have an orchestration background.
Guitar

Guitar

I have played guitar since the age of 10; my father played professionally, and I learned by ear. I completed my BA in Music from Dartmouth College in 2009, and I have been an active musician since.
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

I have been working with Microsoft programs since elementary school. I spent my first five ears out of college working in administration, so I used these programs daily and am proficient in versions for both Mac and Windows.
Music History

Music History

I have a B.A in music from Dartmouth College. I have taken courses in ethnomusicology specializing in the Persian Radif and Hindustani Raga traditions. I studied early music with Bill Summers and intend to pursue a PhD in historical musicology specializing in the late medieval and early Renaissance periods. I have experience and training in various periods and cultures, so I am more than qualified to tutor in this area.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have tutored math from basic arithmetic through college level linear algebra. I continuously teach prealgebra and am comfortable with different methodologies including Common Core
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have tutored precalculus for nearly 15 years. I am a full-time tutor across various subjects, but precalculus, and especially trig based concepts, are a particular favorite.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have taught the SAT professionally for 10 years, including the Math section, first for a boutique firm and later on my own. Students have gone on to many excellent schools and programs, both public and private, worldwide.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I have taught the SAT and ACT since 2009, when I worked for a local tutoring company near my parents' house after graduating college. My students consistently show improvement with consistent work, and previous students have been accepted to schools such as Providence College, Brown University, Westpoint, and Vanderbilt. I recognize that every student is different and has individual goals and strengths, and I develop tailored programs for each student to excel.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

I have tutored all sections of the SAT for nearly a decade, including Writing. Students have ended up at schools such as Providence College, Harvard, Brown, Trinity, among others.
Special Needs

Special Needs

My mother's sister was left with developmental disabilities after 2 bouts with meningitis as a toddler. As a result, I grew up immersed in a family deeply involved with people with special needs. I volunteered with Special Olympics throughout my childhood and into my college years, and my mother continues to work as a job coach for differently abled adults. This prepared me for my time working with the America Reads program, where I was assigned to a classroom with two autistic children and two dyslexic children. I worked with these same children from first through third grades. Throughout my tutoring career, I've worked with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, anxiety issues, confidence issues, and various mental health issues with a high level of effectiveness. I am extremely empathetic and patient, and I have found that my students relate well and trust me. Because I am truly invested in seeing my students succeed, I try to be very tuned in to individual needs and learning quirks, and I adjust my style as necessary.
SSAT

SSAT

I have taught all levels of the SSAT, ISEE, and college entrance exams for nearly ten years as well as subject tutoring for nearly twenty. I know the test formats, the question types, and I also have experience with private school admissions throughout eastern MA
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have a BA from Dartmouth College and nearly 15 years of tutoring experience. I teach my students to move forward in an organized, step-by-step manner. Examples of study skills methods I use include 1) writing possible quotes for papers on individual note cards that organize information/citations while allowing students to play with order and organizational structure 2) using acronyms, music/tunes to help remember information (ex. singing the quadratic equation to "Pop Goes the Weasel") 3) optimizing time management and determining priorities 4) finding real world analogs for abstract concepts
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

I received my BA in music from Dartmouth College. While an undergraduate, I studied voice (I am an operatic contralto) with Louis Burkot and participated in the Dartmouth College Glee Club. After moving to the Boston area, I became involved in the MIT Musical Theatre Guild, capturing 2 leading roles and vocal directing the Guild's production of Jekyll and Hyde. I currently sing with 2 well respected area choirs and have had 2 private students in the area. I am comfortable teaching voice at a beginning to intermediate level.
World History

World History

History is one of my passions. When I was in college, I actually completed the British history concentration, and as a music history major, history has factored heavily into all that I do (European, world, and United States). I have taken and received fives on all of the AP exams, and I teach these subjects frequently. My goal is to tell stories and make the material come alive while paying close attention to detail and connections.
Writing

Writing

I have tutored writing since I was in middle school myself. Upon graduating from Dartmouth, I spent three years working in MIT's writing program before taking my tutoring full time. I focus heavily on process writing as well as grammar to foster fluency.

Awesome!

Ashley spends a good amount of time on test-taking strategy as well as providing info on how to solve questions that you may not know the answer to. She provides SAT and ACT prep materials if needed, assigns extra work to be done between lessons, and reviews previous lessons to reinforce learning. She's constantly assessing progress and keeps parents informed. Her schedule was tight, but she was willing to work it out as needed.

Missed Appointments

Ashley is a good tutor, however she missed two sessions that we had planned on. We would email back an fourth and agree on a time. The last two times we were suppose to meet she never showed. The first time she said she was stuck in traffic, which I don't doubt, but the second time we were suppose to meet she never even emailed to tell me where she was or what was going on. She never showed and I never heard from her again.

Great tutor

We have had a great experience with Ashley thus far. I feel she is a great match for my daughter's needs and can see an improvement in her learning. Ashley is patient and soft spoken which suits my daughter well.
