Hi there! My name is Kiran and my pronouns are she/her. I have a Master's in cybersecurity from Harvard (Dean's List for academic achievement). I got my Bachelor's in computer science and minored in Math at BU. I am a people-person first and foremost: friendly, bright, and with a contagious enthusiasm for math & science. I'm a native English speaker, but I lived abroad in Spain for my high-school years, and I also teach Spanish.
My passion for teaching was sparked early; my mom is a science teacher and inspired in me a love of learning and helping others. My first formal tutoring experience began in high school. From 2010-2014, I tutored children from ages 10-14 in algebra, geometry, and English in the Madrid expat community. Returning to the US for college, I tutored middle and high school students in (pre)calculus and Spanish from 2014-2018. After finishing my undergraduate studies, I took a break from new clients to focus on full-time work in the medical software industry. I resumed tutoring after completing my Master's degree and I'm currently accepting new clients!
For many kids, math class is a tribulation to be suffered, endured, and forgotten as soon as possible. For me, it was a glimpse of fundamental truth, forever changing how I think about the world. This was most true of my experience learning Calculus, and it remains my favorite subject to teach. My goal is to share those kinds of epiphany moments with my students; lessons start with the motivations behind the theory before moving into the practical.
My teaching style emphasizes confidence building through the promotion of a growth mindset. I don't talk down to my students, or give them tests that they can fail; only challenges that they can rise to. My teaching methods are interactive and Socratic; guiding students to new understanding, expressed in their own words. I am committed to cultivating an environment of psychological safety where it's okay to make mistakes, and where LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent students feel respected.
