I have a bachelor’s and master’s in English Literature. As a Master’s student I taught a 200 level core curriculum English lit and comp class called The Art of Fiction to 25-30 students aged 18-50 at a City University. As professor to a core curriculum class I had students of all majors from incoming freshman students aged 18, to ESL students who barely had speaking knowledge of English, to seniors finishing up their degrees needing to fulfill a core curriculum class, and students in their 40’s/50’s going back to school. The majority of students lacked the very fundamentals of literature reading comprehension and analysis not to mention a lack of knowledge regarding an argumentative thesis driven essay and basic writing composition. I had to teach and tailor to every student’s level, needs, and ability which I did with tremendous success. My office hours were extended every week because they were full and I made the time to help every student one-on-one who sought help. Offering rewrites on all formal graded essays enabled me to guide and instruct individual needs and I witnessed the proliferation of student’s abilities, knowledge growth, analytical and critical thinking, and the continued advancement of writing capability. My proudest moments were when students would tell me that their grades in their other classes drastically improved because of the lessons and scholarship I provided. Witnessing students who could not write a thesis at the beginning of the semester accomplish complex thesis essays gave me a personal sense of gratification I have never supplanted and that is why I would like to become a tutor once again–to help people achieve their fullest potential to be able to express themselves better through writing and better understand the world they live in through reading!
