I have 30 years of combined classroom and tutoring experience. Currently, I work as a private educational consultant.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from New York University and a Master’s degree in Reading Education from Harvard University. I help students of all ages learn how to learn, get motivated, gain confidence, and improve study skills. My approach is relaxed and friendly. I have an understanding of ADD/ADHD through the many workshops I have taken. In addition, I have direct experience working with such students in the classroom and privately. I use specific strategies to help students with attentional difficulties succeed and learn. I have attended many IEP meetings and advised parents on how to help their ADD child at home. I've also been supervised in my teaching of ADD/ADHD kids.

As a veteran homeschooling parent, I was both instructor and guidance counselor to my children. I've navigated the college admissions process three times and continue to work with students from 8-12 grade, along with grad students including medical school personal statements. I am active on college admissions forums and attend workshops and training sessions and read extensively on admission trends. I teach a monthly online writing workshop open to the public. My approach is to focus on developing your craft alongside style and voice. I work with teens through adults.

I have a master's degree in education with a concentration in reading. I trained in the Harvard University Reading Lab. I've taken the Wilson Reading Training course and used it with great success with dyslexic students. I was hired to work with dyslexic students as part of the learning support team at two schools.

I'm an award-winning author with many publications and one YA novel. I love literature and getting kids excited about books. I am very familiar with the standard middle and high school literature curriculum. I make sure to give kids contextual information as well as background on the author. I show students how to see the author's "special effects". Helping students develop a language to talk about literature is also key. I enjoy discussing literature with my students as a way to deepen comprehension as well as their understanding of themselves and the world.

I try to keep my math sessions low-key and fun to prevent anxiety and build confidence. I have helped students devise a personal SAT study plan based on their target scores and available time. I have done a great deal of research into the new SAT and examined study strategies and advice from experts across the country. I focus on building needed skills but primarily increasing the students' knowledge of the test itself. Then I introduce tactics for each section, diagnose your weaknesses, and teach you how to learn from your errors. Finally, I'll help you with mental preparation, as well. Doing well on this exam is like training for a marathon--you certainly can't do it in a week.

A tutor's thorough understanding of the SAT is essential for helping students improve their scores. I not only teach my students the content needed to do well, but I show them proven strategies and tactics. I also customize a study plan based on the student's target score and length of time before the test. The SAT essay section is very different. I offer students a template to memorize that helps them tackle the essay with speed and confidence.

I have several years experience working as a school learning specialist for special needs students with IEPs. I assessed, taught, and supported students in grades 1-12 in math, decoding, spelling, comprehension, writing, and study skills. I have a master's degree in education with a focus on the teaching of reading. I am trained in the Wilson Reading System and have continued my professional development in teaching special needs students. My student population includes those with dyslexia, nonverbal LD, speech and language disabilities, dyscalculia, cognitive impairment, ADHD, and anxiety disorders.
