About Evelyn

I have had 25 years of experience of classroom teaching and tutoring students of all ages. My success record is excellent. I help students learn how to learn, get motivated, gain confidence, and improve study skills. I am friendly and approach tutoring sessions in a relaxed manner. I develop a positive rapport with my students. My areas of expertise are: dyslexia, reading skills, elementary and middle school math, literature, writing, study skills, college consulting, and SAT/ACT Reading and Writing prep.

As a young adult author and freelance writer, I teach students the tools of professional writers. I use real models to demonstrate effective writing. I guide students in reading and responding to literature and identifying an author's "special effects". I use the Wilson Reading System and other research-based techniques to help students succeed in reading and spelling.

I also love teaching math. I've developed an effective hands-on approach to teaching fractions, decimals, and percents (an area that often gives students trouble.) I try to get kids excited about math and boost their confidence.

Interested in homeschooling? As a veteran homeschool parent, I consult with families who are investigating home education for their child. I can guide you through the process and help create a home education plan that works for your family.

Do you have a high schooler? I also help students plan for college admissions and tackle that overwhelming application. Avoid the emotional battles with your child over that looming application essay--let me help your teen tell her/his story. I can help with college selection, developing a testing time table, creating an activities resume, navigating the Common Application, advice and strategy.

I'm available year-round with limited openings. I prefer to work in my home office where I have all my materials, however, I am willing to travel within 5 miles of my home or consider online lessons. I'm excited to become part of your child's success team!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have an understanding of ADD/ADHD through the many workshops I have taken. In addition, I have direct experience working with such students in the classroom and privately. I use specific strategies to help students with attentional difficulties succeed and learn. I have attended many IEP meetings and advised parents on how to help their ADD child at home. I've also been supervised in my teaching of ADD/ADHD kids.

College Counseling

As a veteran homeschooling parent, I was both instructor and guidance counselor to my children. I've navigated the college admission's process three times and continue to work with high school students from 9-12 grade. I am active on college admissions forums and attend workshops and fairs. I also read extensively on the subject. I can help students create a time table, find college matches, write an activities resume, craft essays, and make sure the final application shines. My students have all gotten into at least one of their top 3 schools. I work with a diverse population of students applying to all types of colleges.

Dyslexia

I have a master's degree in education with a concentration in reading. I trained in the Harvard University Reading Lab. I've taken the Wilson Reading Training course and used it with great success with dyslexic students. I was hired to work with dyslexic students as part of the learning support team at two schools.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified in elementary education in Massachusetts. I have taught first grade. I have worked as a school K-6 reading specialist for a total of 13 years.

Elementary Math

I love teaching math and seeing kids gain confidence in their abilities. I have devised my own research-based methods for helping kids understand some of the common challenge areas: fractions, decimals, percents, and word problems. I use a fun, hands-on approach customized to your child's learning style and needs.

English

Freelance writer.
Author of children's novel.
Writing workshop instructor.
Middle school English teacher.
Reading specialist.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with children, teens, and adults who are second language learners. I am a certified reading teacher and have taught English for many years. I also am a published writer.

Geometry

I enjoy teaching geometry and have tutored this subject for several years.

Literature

I'm an award-winning author with many publications and one YA novel. I love literature and getting kids excited about books. I am very familiar with the standard middle and high school literature curriculum. I make sure to give kids contextual information as well as background on the author. I show students how to see the author's "special effects". Helping students develop a language to talk about literature is also key. I enjoy discussing literature with my students as a way to deepen comprehension as well as their understanding of themselves and the world.

Phonics

I have a master's degree in reading education. I am trained as a Wilson Reading teacher. I have taught first grade and tutored children with decoding difficulty.

Prealgebra

I have tutored prealgebra for several years. I know the areas where students get stuck. I've also developed my own approach to these problem areas. I try to keep my math sessions low-key and fun to prevent anxiety and build confidence. I enjoy using hands-on techniques to teach prealgebra concepts such as negative numbers, fractions, decimals, and solving equations.

Public Speaking

I have been a featured speaker at the Southern Maryland Reading Conference in 2012. I presented a lecture at the Massachusetts Reading Conference. I spoke at the Chabad Center of Natick about my published novel. I give creative writing workshops. My speech, "Raising Girls Who Dream" was part of Limmud Boston 2012.

Reading

I have a master's degree in Education with a specialization in reading. I worked with children of all ages in and out of the classroom. I have extensive experience teaching students who have dyslexia or reading/language disabilities both in decoding and comprehension.

SAT Reading

I have helped students devise a personal SAT study plan based on their target scores and available time. I have done a great deal of research into the new SAT and examined study strategies and advice from experts across the country. I focus on building needed skills but primarily increasing the students' knowledge of the test itself. Then I introduce tactics for each section, diagnose your weaknesses, and teach you how to learn from your errors. Finally, I'll help you with mental preparation, as well. Doing well on this exam is like training for a marathon--you certainly can't do it in a week.

SAT Writing

A tutor's thorough understanding of the SAT is essential for helping students improve their scores. I not only teach my students the content needed to do well, but I show them proven strategies and tactics. I also customize a study plan based on the student's target score and length of time before the test. The SAT essay section is very different. I offer students a template to memorize that helps them tackle the essay with speed and confidence.

Study Skills

I have a master's degree in education. I've worked as a reading support teacher in middle schools. I tutor students in: how to prepare for tests, manage time, read textbooks, take notes, organize materials, write reports, etc. I prepare private students to take the AP World History exam and SAT English.

Writing

I have worked as a freelance writer for many years and have several publishing credits. My award-winning children's novel was published in 2010. I teach writing workshops to students of all ages. I'm also an approved AP English homeschool teacher. Areas of instruction include: publishing, academic writing, college essays, elementary and high school English, and grammar.
