My name is David Novick, and I hold a Ph.D. in Biology from Tufts University as well as a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Union College. I am a Massachusetts-licensed Biology and Chemistry teacher with an SEI Endorsement, and I have spent more than 30 years teaching science at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Over the course of my career, I have worked with students at institutions including Tufts University, MCPHS University, Fisher College, Gann Academy, and several Massachusetts public high schools, graduating more than 1,000 students along the way.

As a private tutor, I currently hold a 4.9 out of 5 client rating through Varsity Tutors, where I work one-on-one with high school, college, and graduate students in chemistry, biology, and life sciences. I am known for my ability to explain complex concepts clearly, adapt to each student’s individual learning style, and build the kind of confidence that translates directly into better grades and deeper understanding.

Whether you are preparing for an exam, catching up on missed material, or simply determined to truly understand science rather than just get through it, I am here to help. I offer sessions in person throughout Massachusetts and online via Zoom or Google Meet for students anywhere in the world. I look forward to working with you.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

PhD in Biology and 25+ years of teaching experience at the high school, college, and graduate levels both in the classroom and online. Also tutored students one-on-one in the classroom and online.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have tutored chemistry one-on-one for Varsity Tutors and have taught chemistry at the high school and college levels both in the class and online for 25+ years.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I hold a Ph.D. in Biology from Tufts University and Massachusetts teaching licenses in both Biology and Chemistry (9–12), backed by more than 30 years of science education at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels. I have taught Environmental Science at Darrow School and Gann Academy, bringing a research-informed perspective to topics ranging from ecosystems and climate to human environmental impact and sustainability. My background includes post-doctoral work at the UVM Medical School, two peer-reviewed publications in PNAS, and laboratory experience at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In tutoring sessions, I emphasize conceptual understanding and real-world connections, and I am comfortable supporting students at any level, from foundational coursework through AP Environmental Science.
Genetics

Genetics

I have taught for 25+ years at the secondary school level, undergraduate, and graduate school levels. I have taught such subjects as chemistry, forensic science, biochemistry, biology, cell biology, genetics, cancer biology, molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, and pathophysiology. I have taught in the classroom and online and I have tutored students one-on-one in the aforementioned subjects in person or virtually.
Nutrition

Nutrition

I hold a Ph.D. in Biology from Tufts University and have taught Nutrition at the college level at Fisher College, bringing a strong scientific foundation in biochemistry, metabolism, and human physiology to every tutoring session. With more than 30 years of science education experience across high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels, I am well equipped to support students in understanding core nutrition concepts such as macronutrients, micronutrients, digestion, energy balance, and dietary guidelines. My research background — including post-doctoral work at the UVM Medical School and publications in PNAS — informs a rigorous, evidence-based approach to the subject. I tailor each session to the student's specific course, textbook, and learning goals, whether they are enrolled in an introductory health course or a more advanced nutrition science class.
Pharmacology

Pharmacology

I hold a Ph.D. in Biology from Tufts University and have taught Pharmacology at the college level at Fisher College's New Bedford campus, providing students with a rigorous grounding in drug mechanisms, receptor theory, pharmacokinetics, and the physiological effects of therapeutic agents. My research background — including post-doctoral work at the UVM Medical School, laboratory experience at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and two peer-reviewed publications in PNAS — gives me firsthand familiarity with the molecular and cellular science that underlies modern pharmacology. With more than 30 years of teaching experience across high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels, I am skilled at breaking down complex material into clear, accessible concepts for students at any stage of their training. I tailor each tutoring session to the student's specific course objectives, whether they are pursuing studies in nursing, allied health, biology, or pre-medicine.
Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics

I hold a Ph.D. in Biology from Tufts University with extensive graduate-level training in physical and biochemical thermodynamics, and I am a Massachusetts-licensed Chemistry teacher (8–12) with more than 30 years of science education experience. At the high school level, thermodynamics concepts — including heat transfer, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy, and the laws of thermodynamics — appear prominently in both AP Chemistry and AP Physics, and I am well versed in helping students master these topics for both coursework and exam preparation. My approach emphasizes building genuine conceptual understanding first, then connecting those ideas to problem-solving strategies and real-world applications such as chemical reactions, energy systems, and engines. Whether a student is struggling with the basics or aiming for a 5 on the AP exam, I tailor each session to meet them where they are.
