One of the reasons I chose to pursue teaching mathematics was because it seemed there was a fear that students today could not learn math and that teachers were ineffective in the classroom.
I am proud to say that during my career as a math teacher, I have taught and witnessed a great deal of success in teaching students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. One of the traits that I pride myself on as a math teacher is always trying my best to make the subject fun! Mathematics can be a pretty dry subject for some people and I always do my best to put on a theatrical presentation! That said I also think it's important to let students speak their mind when it comes to mathematics. It's important to get to the heart of the misconceptions and if you simply just train someone to follow directions repetitively, it can usually hinder proper understanding down the road.
The other important thing is certainly having patience. Both from myself as well as the students I work with. While some may be naturally gifted in the subject, there are many who struggle. Success takes time as well as commitment, but with the right effort it can happen. That said, I've worked with students of all kinds in terms of their understanding of math. For the most part, most of my experience is teaching and tutoring middle school math students in pre-algebra and algebra 1. I've also worked with students in later elementary years as well.
I am a licensed teacher in Middle School Mathematics in the State of Massachusetts and have also obtained my Master's Degree in teaching Middle School Mathematics (5-8).
