I've taught high school English for over 35 years, including AP English Literature and Composition, Senior Electives, and Masterpieces of American Literature, a required Junior-year course. I enjoy boosting both reading and writing capabilities, and have taught the College Essay process throughout my teaching career. I've taught high school English for over 35 years, including AP English Literature and Composition, Senior Electives, and Masterpieces of American Literature, a required Junior-year course. I enjoy boosting both reading and writing capabilities, and have taught the College Essay process throughout my teaching career. Tutoring students in SAT prep, college essay construction, and the nuts and bolts of effective critical (argumentative) writing have formed the backbone of my teaching career. Much of my work with SAT tutoring and college essay preparation has been done one-on-one, with individual students. I think that students learn best in a one-on-one environment, so it's up to you whether this occurs in person or online!

I believe that all understanding of great reading comes from making empathetic connections to the subject matter. Effective writing also depends centrally on developing a personal viewpoint which the writer is actively involved in conveying to his/her reader. Good reading and writing, then, require both heart and head to carry them along to successful completion. I would be happy to help you to attain these goals, especially in regard to raising your writing grades and (key thing!) writing a college essay that will be a "Value Added" part of your Application.

I have taught MS and US English, including hundreds of literary titles, over 35 years, and have won five school-wide teaching awards over these years. Over 35 years, I taught AP English Literature for fifteen years, rotating my booklist among 20 or so classics of English and American Literature-- poetry, fiction, and dramatic literature.

Having taken 24 Upper Level literature courses at the undergraduate and graduate level I have read hundreds of works of world-class literature. Over my 35 year teaching career, I have taught a range of these texts and many more classics at grade level. Further, I keep abreast of acclaimed new works of literature as they are published.

I’ve taught the art of composition, both argumentative and creative writing, for over 35 years. The chief values I espouse in argumentative writing are logic and verbal clarity. At the same time, all effective critical writing must move from generalities to specifics, including pointed evidence from the text. In creative work, vivid language works to eschew the general observation and replace it with specifics of time and place. Clarity is celebrated, thus, in creative work as well, as characters, setting and plot are developed.

Best of the Best

William advised my son, a junior in HS, on an APLC philosophy paper. We were in a "must get an 'A+' situation". The assignment was complex with a higher level of difficulty than most APLC assignments. Having attended a top US university myself, and currently stewarding a daughter at an Ivy League school; I attest that William is among the best tutors we have found. We were fortunate to receive his help and remain grateful for his efforts.
