My name is David. I am a teacher because I believe that intelligence is not just a matter of what one knows but more a matter of how one applies their intelligence to learning more about themselves and the world around them. My education at Curry College and Boston University cultivated within me a passion to learn and teach others to make connections and develop their understanding. My experiences learning and teaching in both the academic and martial arts settings have taught me, among other things, that learning is fundamentally unique to each person and therefore we all benefit from taking the time and care to explore how best we learn. I focus my lessons through a conversational style, preferring to talk with students to better express new ideas and develop connections to their every day worlds.

I have worked with Curry College for the past 6 semesters within the Philosophy and Religion department. The classes I've taught include Introduction to Chinese Philosophy, Eastern Religion and Philosophy, The Meaning of Life, and Beginnings of Philosophy. These classes and others cover traditions ranging from Ancient Greece, China, and Europe.

My passion for learning is grounded through my study of the martial arts. Since the age of 6 I have studied the arts of Kenpo, Kung Fu, and Uechi Ryu Karate-Do. I presently hold a fourth degree black belt in Uechi Ryu and have 11 years of experience in the art. My focus is on personal development, self-defense, and traditional practice, emphasizing the development of physical, mental and emotional balance.

Martial Arts

Martial Arts

I have been a student of the martial arts since the age of 6. I have studied Kenpo Karate, Kung Fu, and Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do. I hold a fourth degree black belt in Uechi-Ryu and have been studying this art for the past 11 years. It is within this style that I also have teaching experience, working with both children and adults at Peter McRae's Karate school in Plymouth, Ma, at William Repoff's School of Okinawan Karate-Do in Quincy Ma, and as a private tutor. When teaching karate I focus on the development of coordination of the students' physical, mental and emotional states. I teach forms traditional to Uechi Ryu along with self defense techniques associated with this system, as well as other practical advice pertaining to personal defense.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I developed my abilities in Public Speaking while studying Communication at Curry College. While there I took a Fundamentals of Communication class, an Advanced Public Speaking course, and participated in several Curry Theater productions. In addition, I competed in the Curry College Public Speaking Contest three years in a row and took first place during my final speech. My classes and experiences have shown me how to address both content and method of addressing the public, along with exercises to calm nerves and warm up vocal muscles.
