About Albert

I use a modified process writing approach to teach practical strategies that high school and college students can apply to their papers, exams, college applications, and future professional endeavors. Drawing on 25 years of experience as an editor and writer for general interest, trade, and corporate publications, I focus on quickly improving a student’s approach to composition by addressing challenges that he or she has encountered. Then, I teach fundamentals of organization and style, building on them to create habits and develop approaches that foster greater fluency.

I draw on my knowledge of literature, journalism, and popular culture to personalize my instruction in a way that will engage a student’s interests and imagination. I have a bachelor’s degree in literature from Columbia University, and have experience as both a classroom teacher and an instructor of adult non-readers. My creative writing has appeared in the New York Times and Salon.com, among other publications. I have been a contributing editor for Zagat’s dining guides, and have worked in the corporate world for major firms such as Morgan Stanley, Ernst & Young, and BNP Paribas. I am also eager to work with adults seeking to improve their business writing.

Thanks to the education I received early on from my teachers, I have been able to adapt and apply my writing skills to many different types of projects. While not everyone is going to be a writer, at some point everyone has to write – I’ll show you how to put maximum effort into planning and setup in order to facilitate the expression of ideas. I would welcome the opportunity to share practical solutions that you can use now and in the future.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a BA in Humanities from Columbia University, with a concentration in English, and tested in the 97th percentile of the English Literature GRE. I have a thoroughgoing knowledge of European, American, and World literature.

Proofreading

I have worked as an editor for commercial, trade, corporate, and general interest publications for 30 years. I have proofread and copy edited annual reports and marketing material for major clients, including Ernst & Young and DTCC.

Public Speaking

I wrote and staged two one-person shows in New York, and was an active participant in the city's storytelling scene. In the corporate world, I worked with trainers to develop speeches and classroom presentations. Also, I deliver speeches locally as a fundraiser for the Jewish Federation. My experience in both delivering and creating original material for live audiences gives me the ability to share presentation and writing strategies with students seeking help with public speaking.

Reading

I worked for many years as a literacy tutor, and know how to teach the fundamentals beginning and intermediate readers need to know. I believe in the phonics method, rather that "whole language" or similar strategies. Students need to be able to recognize patterns and the building blocks of words and sentences, and this is what I teach.

SAT Writing

Good SAT writing begins with good writing. First, I address a student's grasp of the fundamentals, then I teach him or her how read an SAT question and identify what precisely is being asked. Then, I teach ways of concisely organizing the themes and ideas the student wishes to convey.

Writing

I have worked as a professional writer for 30 years for general interest, trade, commercial, and corporate publications. For my students, I use a modified process writing approach to instill fundamentals of organization and expression that can be applied to every type of writing project. No matter what their ultimate academic ambitions or desired career path, my students will come away understanding the value of clear writing and with the composition tools necessary to perform well on today's papers and tests, as well as tomorrow's professional endeavors.
