My name is Derek, and I currently work as a math teacher at Thayer Academy. I have an extensive background in mathematics which I use to bring the highest-quality instruction to my students. One of my best assets as a teacher and tutor is connecting with students and meeting them wherever their mathematical abilities may be.
I went to the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA where I majored in Mathematics. There, I spent two years tutoring high school students at a local high school in Worcester. Immediately out of college, I worked for a financial consulting firm in Boston. However, I knew my passion was teaching, so I left the financial sector after just one year and began my teaching career.
I strive everyday to make my students better math thinkers. I do not think the way to approach mathematics is to memorize formulas or theorems, but rather to think critically and analytically through a problem. In doing so, my students are prepared for success for both high school and college-level mathematics.
