I got started in education as an undergraduate at Harvard, where I worked at afterschool and summer programs tutoring students in Boston. Immediately after graduating, I joined Teach For America, teaching in Philadelphia public schools for five years. I taught sixth grade (all subjects) and fourth grade (math and science only). I also ran a fun afterschool and summertime science program where we did things like shark dissections and crime scene investigation techniques. My Philly students fell in a wide range of ability levels, and I was able to improve students' math and science scores by focusing on fundamentals like decoding and basic fact recall.
For four years, I taught third and fourth grade math and science at a school for gifted students who were all performing at least one grade level above their peers. I adapted grade-level curriculum to meet the needs of students who expected a rigorous academic challenge.
I have also coached adults in various capacities, from student teachers and first-year teachers to other students in my PhD program who needed help with statistics.
In addition to tutoring, I also work on curriculum development.
