Hello my name is E! I’m currently a junior at Wheaton College (MA) working towards double majors in English and Secondary English Education and a minor in Religion. During my sophomore year, I took a course specifically on tutoring writing and I have spent the last year working as a Peer Writing Tutor at my college. I work with students at different stages of their writing process, and help students think outside of the box when it comes to formatting their essays. The transition from high school to college writing can be a big jump for students who benefited from the extra structure in high school, so I teach them strategies to break out of that mold and have some fun with what they are learning and writing about.

From helping students in the brainstorming process and interpreting essay prompts to polishing final drafts, I meet students where they are at so they make a finished piece of work they can be proud about. When students struggle understanding where they need to start, I help them organize things into smaller steps so they feel less intimidated and overwhelmed by their assignments, and a part of that comes from understanding the importance of incorporating different learning styles. Additionally, I think one of the most valuable skills someone can grow with their writing is to have their own voice. Seeing a person’s thoughts and personality through their work adds something to it that can’t be made through grammar alone, so I make sure to find the perfect balance between academic and stylistic writing.

Writing can be difficult without the proper resources and help, and while I have a lot of tools I can pull out, if students or parents know of any methods that help them in their process I would be happy to hear them and use that as our starting point. I am easy to reach and will do my best to provide timely responses. If you have any questions or want to schedule a session with me please feel free to reach out! I look forward to working with you.

Grammar

Grammar

Part of my work as a future educator has been on learning about the common grammar mistakes students make and how to identify those patterns. I like to tackle the grammar and structural aspects of a student's work that shows up frequently, making my approach to teaching more specific to the individual rather than the larger scale.
Literature

Literature

I am an English and Secondary English Education double major. I have worked on identifying different methods of note taking and studying literature in my education classes in addition to using these same skills for my own education.
Proofreading

Proofreading

When working on more complete drafts when tutoring writing, I have done closer proofreading on essays and creative writing work. When proofreading, I help students with their sentence structure and grammar while still ensuring their unique voice is heard in their writing.
Writing

Writing

At college I took a class on Tutoring College Writing, and I have spent the past year tutoring my peers. I met students at all stages of writing and helped them develop the different skills needed to make a strong paper, such as how to format different essay types and how to use different citation models.
