Prior to that I taught high school English with a focus on writing for 13 years and tutored students in college essay writing for 2 years.

I have been tutoring two 8th grade students for the SSAT for several weeks. I have reviewed the test requirements carefully and this, combined with my extensive experience teaching vocabulary, critical reading, and writing to students in grade 9 as a secondary English teacher help me make the most of one on one test prep with students. I go beyond working practice questions, and include lessons on building vocabulary through learning roots and prefixes and writing sentences. I discuss strategy for critical reading sections and often ask students to point out where in the passage they found the answer, to help identify how the students are reading and if they are picking up on signal words in the passage and relationships between sentences.

My ten years of teaching experience have helped me to understand the reading, writing, and organizational skills students need for academic success. I have worked within a high school science department, focusing on text book reading strategies, lab writing strategies, and study skills. As an English teacher, I encouraged students to use different organizational strategies for writing and graphic organizers as study sheets for literary selections and vocabulary. Recently I team taught a study skills class where a colleague and I developed projects addressing specific reading strategies for fiction and non-fiction. I am well versed in reading strategies that can help with comprehension of different textbooks.
