Education, especially elementary education, depends upon positive connections built between student and teacher. As a teacher and a tutor, I take time to build a positive connection with my students which enables students to relax, even while working hard to master new skills and content. Tutoring students enables me to focus on individual students in such a way as to make a substantial difference in their lives. This reward is truly priceless!
I have been a teacher of mathematics throughout my career as a classroom teacher. This, in turn, means that I am a student of methodologies. It is fascinating to see how children make sense of numeracy and computation and how they use innate abilities to tackle new material. I have worked with a wide range of math thinkers- from the very concrete who need instruction that involves hands-on materials and authentic contexts to more abstract, flexible mathematicians who love a good stretch.
Two of the greatest pleasures of teaching are interacting with students through book talks and in writing conferences.
