I'm Rachel, a current physics student at Smith College. While I am studying to become a scientist, I absolutely love to write and read just about anything, whenever I have a spare moment (and science is full of great stories to tell!). No matter what your plans for the future are, having a strong background in English will help you in achieving your goals.
My experience in tutoring is mainly in helping non-science students with their science classes. The skills that I have learned from this particular experience are translatable to all types of tutoring-- particularly communication. There is nothing better than reaching a point of understanding where the miscommunication (between teacher and student, or exam question and anxious test-taker, for example) occurred, and working to dismantle it. I myself had a physics tutor in high school and I remember the feeling of relief and success when my tutor would understand what I wasn't understanding, and explain it in a way that suddenly made everything *click*. That is what I aspire to bring to my tutoring sessions: patience, understanding, and the love of solving puzzles.
Additionally, I have extensive experience with writing, public speaking, and preparing to take the reading and writing sections of the ACT. All of these subjects are related-- it's just wrangling with language in different settings (timed, in front of others, in long essay form, et cetera). As far as public speaking goes, I've been presenting at conferences for the past four years and have basically been through every terrible public speaking mishap you can imagine, so I can help you avoid those pitfalls as well as the butterflies in your stomach. When it comes to the ACT, I achieved perfect scores on ACT English and ACT reading after a lot of learning, and I can transfer all that learning to you. Standardized tests are stressful and the English sections can be intimidating, but there are so many strategies that you can use to maximize your scores. For writing in general, the same idea applies:
