About Nicole

Bio

I received my BA in English Studies and Middle School Education from Lesley University in June 2011, and I am licensed by Massachusetts to teach English in grades 5-8. I completed my Masters of Education with a specialization in Learning and Instruction at Northeastern University in 2013. I have implemented lessons in vocabulary, grammar, and literature. I completed my Masters of Education with a specialization in Learning and Instruction at Northeastern University in 2013. I have implemented lessons in vocabulary, grammar, and literature. I have also become familiar with the EmPower writing program as well as the six traits of writing, offering constructive feedback and modeling writing assignments. I have been tutoring for eight years and have seen students' grades improve in every class: not only English. I help students to develop skills in note-taking, test preparation, organization, writing, reading, and grammar. I enjoy tutoring because I love helping students succeed. My teaching style promotes confidence in students to help them reach their full academic potential.

Grammar

Student will be able to understand all parts of speech and apply their understanding to become a better reader and writer. This includes nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and diagramming sentences.
Literature

Literature

I am happy to read books along with students. We will look into theme, plot, setting, point of view, figurative language, reliable narrators, unfamiliar words, predictions, accessing background knowledge, foreshadowing, and much more.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Student will complete practice proofreading exercises and apply their knowledge in order to proofread their own work. This includes watching for verb agreement, avoiding "blah" words, correct punctuation and spelling, word choice, etc...
Reading

Reading

I am happy to read books along with students. We will work on developing reading skills by practicing reading aloud and independently. I will also check the student's reading comprehension regularly. We will look into theme, plot, setting, point of view, figurative language, reliable narrators, unfamiliar words, predictions, accessing background knowledge, foreshadowing, and much more.
Spelling

Spelling

I will work with the student to help them remember spelling rules and reminders that should make the process easier. I will encourage them to try writing independently rather than using spell-check. By seeing which words the student struggles with, I should be able to find a pattern and develop strategies to help the student overcome their struggle with spelling.
SSAT

SSAT

As an English teacher and tutor, I help students to prepare for the English portion of the SSAT as well as the writing. I focus on time management, test-taking strategies, and preparing for a variety of writing prompts.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have taught study skills for 2 years in middle school classrooms. It is important that students know how to prepare for tests, take notes, create and follow a schedule, and complete all assignments on time. We practice reading instructions, creating and checking off to-do lists, using calendars to track upcoming tests, quizzes, and assignments. I also help students to highlight important information in a text and develop strategies for when they are confused or stuck on an assignment.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Student will learn to define words based on prefixes and suffixes. The student will learn the part of speech, definition, and correct use in a sentence for every vocabulary word. The words will be challenging, however will be useful in everyday conversations. By learning prefixes and suffixes, the student will be able to define words independently.

Student will develop and practice: Brainstorming Writing Topic Sentences Writing a Thesis Statement Using Supporting Details Writing Introductions and Conclusions Editing their Writing I am familiar with the EmPower writing program and use that to help students write persuasive, expository, and research-based essays.
