MY APPROACH

I firmly believe that anyone can succeed in mathematics, science, and engineering with the right help and encouragement. My approach to tutoring is to help students gain a deeper understanding of fundamental concepts, to develop skills and to master techniques for solving real problems, and to build confidence through practice and encouragement. I help students to understand not only the "what" of each topic, but also the "why" and the "how.”

I emphasize four key dimensions in preparing students for math, science, and engineering:

1. Conceptual understanding
2. Problem-solving methods
3. Test-taking strategies
4. Self-directed learning

MY EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring a wide variety of physics and electrical engineering topics, as well as the advanced mathematics required to understand these subjects. I have helped high school, college, and graduate students improve their grades or pass courses that they had previously failed.

I hold a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Boston University, a Master of Science in Management from MIT, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Dartmouth College. I currently work as a freelance software engineer and data analyst with a focus on digital signal processing.

Approved Subjects

Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. Differential Equations was a crucial prerequisite for admission to this program, and for most of the courses I took to earn the degree. I also tutored undergraduate engineering students in Differential Equations for two years while I was a graduate student. And I use Differential Equations as a key part of my current job as an engineer at a company that provides software for numerical modeling and simulation of dynamic systems based on differential equations and linear algebra.
Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering

I hold a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Boston University. While I was a graduate student, I tutored undergraduates in a wide variety of math, physics, and electrical engineering subjects--including electrical circuits, signals and systems, electromagnetics, digital signal processing, etc. I currently work as a signal processing engineer for an engineering software company.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have been programming in MATLAB for more than 18 years, including 9 years as a Senior Applications Engineer at MathWorks, where I taught customers how to use MATLAB and how to write MATLAB code.
Physics

Physics

I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring Physics 1 and 2, both algebra-based and calculus-based. I have deep expertise especially in electricity and magnetism, including electrical circuits, Coulomb's Law, Gauss's Law, electrical potential, the electric field, the magnetic field, Ampere's Law, Faraday's Law, and magnetic induction. I am also very strong in oscillations and waves, including light and sound waves.

The Go-To Tutor for Electronic Circuits Help

Rick provided excellent tutoring for my electronic circuits class. He had a clear and structured approach to teaching, which made even the most complex topics easier to understand. Rick was patient, attentive, and always willing to answer my questions, no matter how small. He not only helped me grasp the theoretical concepts but also guided me in applying them to practical problems, which was incredibly helpful for my coursework. Thanks to his support, I gained more confidence in the subject and was able to approach assignments and exams with a much better understanding. I’d highly recommend Rick to anyone looking for a knowledgeable and supportive tutor in electronics or related subjects.

Rick is very knowledgeable , patient and an overall very good tutor

I am a seasoned power system, who graduated a longtime ago, and decided to now prepare for the FE exam. There were some electronics topics I needed help with , he did a great job at showing me the best strategy to tackle those problems.

Wonderful tutor!

Rick worked with my son all semester for his circuits class as an Engineering major. He communicated quickly and worked well with my son. I am so thrilled we found Rick! My son did well in the class and felt much more confident about the content.

great teacher, very detailed instructions

Rick is so detailed. His instructions are at my pace and he makes sure I understand concepts and problems before moving on in my lessons. This is very important because one concept builds in the knowledge of previous concepts. He is very patient with me when I don’t understand something. I really like his tutoring style.

Thorough Tutor, patient and flexible

Has taught me more about electrical theory in a couple hours then my professor all semester, specifically AC operations. I have learned about frequency reactions, phasors, rectangular form, reading critically/under/over damped
