My name is Jasmine and Math and Science are my loves!
My current work is in K-8 Math curriculum and I am a former secondary mathematics teacher, having taught the following courses in their entirety: Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry. I held a Standard Certificate of Teaching in Mathematics and a Certificate of Eligibility with Advance Standing of Teaching Students with Disabilities. I have experience working with both general education and special education students (including students with individualized educational plans). My tutoring experience predates my years in education; I first began tutoring in college (15+ years of tutoring experience total). I have tutored students ranging from 3rd grade to undergrad freshmen, mostly in the varying mathematics courses but also other secondary subjects. I also have experience tutoring adult students as I worked at Bloomfield College as a professional tutor.
I have two main priorities as a tutor and they govern all of my interactions with my students. My first priority is to improve the academic achievement of my students. Thus far, each student I have tutored has improved at minimum one full grade level after weekly sessions for an entire term. In improving academic achievement, I am diligent in teaching students in the academic content in a way that is aligned to the way they are learning in their classroom. I do this by asking students to bring their classroom notes to each session and constantly referring to the material they already have. As needed, I supplement my tutoring with my own instructional material to ensure that the students have mastered each concept. The second of my priorities in tutoring is building confidence in my students. I have genuine love for mathematics and in each tutoring session, I try to convey that love through excitement and joy. I celebrate the small victories with students as they begin to master each concept so that over time, they are each confident in the mathematics skills and problem solving abilities.
