Hi! My name is Sam, and I am a recent graduate from Tufts University with a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. I graduated with a 3.97 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and I am currently working as a software engineer for a medical technology company in MA. In my final two spring semesters, I was a teaching assistant for one of my electrical engineering classes at Tufts, and one of my favorite parts of that experience was just being able to help the students better understand the topic and give them the tools they needed to succeed on their own. I also realized that I love teaching people about things that I am knowledgeable and passionate about, and I can think of no better way to continue doing so than tutoring.
While I am new to Wyzant, I do have prior tutoring experience. When I was in high school, a good friend of mine had a younger sister who was struggling in geometry. Her parents kindly asked me to tutor her, and after doing weekly sessions for just a few months, I helped her improve her grade by more than a whole letter. Additionally, being a TA for two years gave me even more experience finding new ways to explain topics to students who were struggling in the class. I was also sometimes responsible for introducing brand new topics altogether, so I have become very skilled at making initially complex topics much more more digestible.
As a tutor, my main goal is to help students succeed in their classes and improve their fundamental understanding of the topics they struggle with. I believe that one of the most effective ways to get better at something is simply to practice, so my tutoring style will include plenty of examples and practice questions. I also think that overly verbose explanations often do more harm than good, so I like to include lots of visuals and diagrams in my explanations whenever possible. However, I know that each student is unique in their learning style, so I will happily work with students and their parents to figure out what works best for them :)
