Hello, I'm Andrew-Lucien, a first-year at Tufts University studying International Relations and Urban Studies with a minor in economics, philosophy, and astrophysics. I tutor in the two subjects I enjoy most: writing and mathematics.
At Tufts, I write columns for the Tufts Daily alongside news, write for the Hemispheres International Relations Journal, and conduct extensive client research for the Boston Risk Group, a consulting pre-professional society. I have also published policy briefs at the Institute for Youth in Policy. I also earned college credit in calculus through Advanced Placement Exams and in English Literature, and last year I was admitted to every University of California campus, the University of Southern California, Harvard University, and Yale University, with my ultimate decision being to commit to Tufts University.
Most of my essay work has been one-on-one peer tutoring with younger underclassmen on their English literature class essays and university application essays. This includes brainstorming, outlining, and line-by-line revisions. Good writing is mostly clear thinking, so I start by helping students figure out what they actually want to say, then build a structure that proves it, from the thesis to topic sentences, to evidence, and analysis. I can help with middle school book reports, high school literary analysis, research papers, argumentative essays, and college application essays. When I edit, I sharpen a student's own words rather than rewrite them, so the essays still sound like them and they learn to do it on their own next time.
In mathematics, I tutor everything from elementary arithmetic through calculus, and I earned college credit in calculus through AP Exams of levels 1-2. Most of my experience has been tutoring elementary school students virtually for two years, where I learned to teach the why before the how, build real, easy-to-conceptualize examples, and then move to the procedure, having students explain each step back to me.
