I am in my 9th full year of teaching ESL. I taught three years abroad (in Italy) at private language centers and in the public school system, and since 2018 I have been teaching English at an international student centers in and around Boston. Currently, I teach four days a week at a private school for adult immigrants, and to supplement this, I offer private online and in-person tutoring. I have extensive experience teaching ESL students from Colombia, Brazil, Japan, China, India, Russia, Europe and Africa.

With over 5,000 hours of classroom, online, and private one-on-one ESL experience under my belt, I bring a unique teaching approach to students - as I have a deep understanding of the struggles of learning a new language. I focus on the student's needs, and employ a balance of conversation with grammar and phonetics. I use a mixture of materials, technology, games and activities to build fluency and confidence.

I received my Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (CTEFL) from Via Lingua, Florence, Italy in the summer of 2016. In the spring 2021, I received my provisional Massachusetts's Teacher License (K-12) through the state's Dept. of Education. I teach children, teens, and adults in both individual and group settings.

I am ready and excited to help you achieve your English language goals!

English

I received my B.A. in English Literature at Boston College, with a focus on British Romantic fiction and poetry, and post-modern American fiction. I spent over 25 years working in the fields of informal science education (at Harvard University), communications, publishing (Inc. Magazine) and public television (WGBH-NOVA).
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I received my TEFL certification in Florence, Italy in June of 2016, and have been teaching ESL at an intense pace ever since. I have over 850 classroom teaching hours (in both Italy and the U.S.), and have taught all levels from beginner to advanced. My students run the gamut of ages, from age 7 to age 60. I use a number of teaching techniques and employ a combination of resources, including textbooks, video, music, and numerous conversation activities that I have culled from various sources. My goal with each lesson is to achieve an 80/20 split between Student Talking Time and Teacher Talking Time. I aim for 60/20/20 ratio with regards to conversation, listening and reading. I emphasize comprehension over grammar, but I am well-trained in the teaching of English grammar. In addition to my TEFL certification, I posses a bachelor's in English literature from Boston College.
Grammar

Grammar

I am trained, certified and experienced in the teaching of ESL. I received my master's-level CTEFL training in Florence, Italy in 2016. A significant portion of my certification process was devoted to the study and mastery of English grammar. Since graduating, I began teaching (mostly) Italian children, teens and adults at all levels of ESL proficiency. Grammar is a huge part of my teaching, as it forms the "foundation" on which we build the walls and roof that is the structural "house" that we call English conversation. I have taught and tutored over 200 students -- totaling over 850 classroom hours -- in the fascinating (albeit frustrating and complicated) world of English grammar. My style is student-focused, and I try to make lessons fun and lively through the use of elicitation-based conversation, games, video and other teaching tactics.
Reading

Reading

I am trained, certified and experienced in the teaching of English and ESL. I received my master's-level CTEFL training in Florence, Italy in 2016. A significant portion of my certification process was devoted to the study and mastery of English grammar, as well as intensive training in teaching methodologies, with focus on proven techniques for teaching English phonetics, reading, and listening comprehension. Since graduating, I began teaching (mostly) Italian children, teens and adults at all levels of ESL proficiency. Reading (with emphasis on phonetics) is a huge part of the language acquisition process, as it forms the foundation of "receptive" learning. I have taught and tutored over 80 students -- totaling over 350 classroom hours -- in the fascinating (albeit frustrating and complicated) world of English language study. My style is student-focused, and I try to make lessons fun and lively through the use of elicitation-based conversation, games, video and other teaching tactics.
