About Winson

Bio

I hold a PhD in psychology, with graduate training that was heavily quantitative, including statistics, mathematical modeling, and programming in Python, R, and MATLAB. Mathematics has been a daily working tool for me for over 10 years, and that is what I bring to tutoring. I don't present math as a set of rules to memorize. I teach it the way I use it, as a way of reasoning through problems step by step until the answer makes sense.

My teaching experience spans university and one-on-one settings. I have served as a teaching assistant, instructor, and guest lecturer, leading discussion sections, running exam review sessions, and working individually with students during office hours. I have also mentored elementary to college students one on one for 4 years, supporting them through coursework.

My approach starts with finding exactly where a student's understanding breaks down, rather than reteaching everything from the beginning. I ask students to explain their thinking out loud, use concrete examples and visuals before moving to abstract notation, and break multi-step problems into manageable pieces. My background in psychology shapes how I handle the parts of learning that aren't purely academic: math anxiety, frustration, and the habit of giving up too early. I pace each session to the student, build on what they already know, and celebrate progress so confidence grows alongside skill. My goal is for every student to leave able to solve problems independently and to understand why the methods work, not just how to apply them.

Approved Subjects

Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I apply biostatistical methods to clinical and biomedical data in a medical setting, including study design, power and sample size calculations for grant proposals, and analysis of longitudinal and repeated-measures data. I am experienced with logistic regression, odds ratios and relative risk, linear mixed-effects models with correlated errors, and corrections for multiple comparisons such as false discovery rate, which are essential when analyzing large brain imaging datasets. I can help students understand randomized trials, cohort and case-control designs, sensitivity and specificity, and how to choose the right analysis for a given clinical question. I tutor students in public health, nursing, medicine, and biomedical sciences, from introductory biostatistics courses through thesis and dissertation analyses.
Chinese

Chinese

I am a native Mandarin speaker and fully fluent in English, which lets me explain Chinese pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary clearly by contrasting them with how English works. I teach pinyin and tones from the very beginning, since accurate pronunciation is the foundation for being understood, and I build reading and writing skills in simplified characters step by step, with traditional characters available on request. I work with beginners as well as intermediate students who want to improve conversational fluency, prepare for the HSK exam, or support Chinese coursework in school. Lessons focus on practical, everyday language and cultural context so students can use what they learn in real conversations right away.
Data Analysis

Data Analysis

I work with large, complex datasets every day, handling the full analysis workflow from importing and cleaning raw data to exploring patterns, building summaries, and presenting results clearly. Beyond R, I analyze data in Python with tools such as pandas and NumPy. I also take on independent consulting projects building data-processing pipelines for clients, which has given me practical experience translating real-world questions into structured analyses and deliverables. I help students and professionals with data analysis coursework, capstone projects, and workplace data tasks, focusing on how to ask the right questions of the data and communicate findings that others can act on.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I teach math to elementary-age children online, and I design lessons around how young kids actually learn, drawing on my background in developmental and cognitive psychology. I focus on building strong number sense, place value, addition and subtraction strategies, multiplication facts, fractions, and word problems, aligned with Common Core and the student’s school curriculum. Lessons use visual models, hands-on examples, and short games to keep young students engaged and help abstract ideas stick. I keep sessions encouraging and low-pressure, because early confidence in math shapes how children approach the subject for years to come.
Neuroscience

Neuroscience

My professional work centers on the human brain, including analyzing high-field fMRI and EEG data to study brain networks, consciousness, and how drugs such as anesthetics alter brain function. I have authored peer-reviewed articles in neuroscience and work hands-on with neuroimaging analysis tools, so I can explain not just textbook facts but how scientists actually measure and interpret brain activity. I tutor high school and college students in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurotransmission, sensory and motor systems, and cognitive and systems neuroscience, as well as graduate students learning fMRI or EEG analysis methods. I use diagrams, real brain images, and step-by-step explanations to turn complex mechanisms into clear, memorable concepts.
Psychology

Psychology

I earned my PhD in psychology, with specialized expertise in cognitive neuroscience, consciousness, mindfulness and meditation, and psychological measurement. I have taught psychology and neuroscience at the university level as a teaching assistant, instructor, and guest lecturer, and I regularly give public talks explaining how the mind and brain work to non-specialist audiences. I tutor introductory and AP Psychology as well as college courses in cognitive and biological psychology, experimental methods, and psychological statistics. I connect textbook theories to real-world examples and current findings, helping students truly understand the material for exams, papers, and class discussions.
R

R

I have used R for years as my primary tool for statistical analysis, including regression, mixed-effects models with packages such as nlme, correlation analysis, and psychometric methods like scale validation and reliability testing. I regularly build complete analysis pipelines in R, from importing and cleaning messy data and handling missing values to producing clear, publication-quality visualizations and writing reproducible scripts. Because I also program in Python and MATLAB, I can explain core programming concepts in a way that transfers across languages. I help students with R coursework, statistics assignments, capstone or thesis data analysis, and debugging, with a focus on understanding why the code works rather than just getting it to run.
SPSS

SPSS

I trained in SPSS during my psychology doctoral studies and have used it extensively for survey and questionnaire data, including developing and validating psychological scales. I can guide students through every stage in SPSS, from setting up variables, recoding, and reverse-scoring items to computing scale scores, running reliability analyses such as Cronbach’s alpha, and conducting chi-square tests, ANOVA, regression, and factor analysis. I place special emphasis on reading SPSS output tables correctly and writing up results in proper APA format, which is where many students get stuck. I help undergraduate and graduate students in psychology, nursing, education, and other social sciences with assignments, theses, and dissertations, and I also teach SPSS syntax so analyses are faster and reproducible.
Statistics

Statistics

Statistics is the core of my professional work, and I apply a wide range of methods every week, from t-tests, ANOVA, and regression to mixed-effects models, factor analysis, permutation testing, and machine learning techniques such as clustering and classification. I also evaluate the statistical analyses in scientific manuscripts as a journal reviewer, which has trained me to spot common errors in study design, assumptions, and interpretation of results. I tutor students from AP Statistics and introductory college courses through graduate-level methods, covering probability, sampling distributions, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and effect sizes. I emphasize the intuition behind each test, so students know not only how to calculate a result but when a method is appropriate and what the numbers actually mean.
