Hey all! My name is Matt S., and I am excited to help you in your mathematics journey!

I am a robotics engineer with extensive experience in mathematics, CAD, and communication. I earned my Bachelors degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2015, followed shortly by my Masters from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2018. Both were in mechanical engineering with a focus on robotics. After that, I went to Washington State for a few years to work in the field, and now I am back in the northeast working at the Broad Institute, a non-profit cancer research firm. I am so happy to be able to use my experience to help others.

It is for this reason that I joined as a tutor on Wyzant. I have extensive experience in teaching. I was part of the Scouting program for around twenty years, during which I spent five summers working at a camp where I taught young Scouts the basics of outdoorsmanship. During my time at Wentworth, I was also a math tutor, during which I had many repeat students and was usually booked for all of my work hours. As an educator, I believe not just in helping students to complete their schoolwork, but in empowering them to do it for themselves. At the end of the day, tutoring is about helping the student instill the knowledge within themselves, rather than rely on someone else. I do not just explain a concept, but go deeper and explain WHY. If you are my student, the question you will hear me ask most often is "Do you understand this?" Because I have not properly done my job until I am sure that you do.

I am a mechanical engineer with two different degrees. I use math in my job almost every day, and most of it is algebra or geometry due to the nature of my work. I also have about 15 years of experience in teaching those younger than me, and I used to be a mathematics tutor in college.

Mechanical Engineering

I have two degrees in mechanical engineering, a bachelors and a masters. I have spent a decade working in the field on everything from agricultural industrial equipment to fine-tuned robotics. I also have experience in teaching mechanical engineering to others, since I used to tutor in its subjects in the past.

Robotics

I have been almost exclusively studying robotics since the end of my undergraduate degree. My final project for my bachelors was a robotic arm with wrist functionality, and my thesis for my masters was a self-driving car model. I have worked at three different companies where robotics was my primary focus, including Omron Robotics and Safety Technologies, iRobot Corporation, and Exact Sciences. I currently am a Senior Bioautomation Engineer at the Broad Institute, where I program and manage the liquid handling robots in our lab.

Solidworks

Solidworks

I have been working in CAD systems, primarily SolidWorks, since I was a junior in high school. I became so proficient at it that I tested out of the required CAD course in my first year of undergraduate school. Since then, I have acquired my Certified SolidWorks Expert (CSWE) certification and have worked as a mechanical engineer in the field for over a decade.
