I am a recently retired, long-time public school teacher fully MA certified in Reading and ESL, K-12, with a Master's of Science in Reading from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. I love teaching students of all ages, including adults. I have been fortunate in helping students and their families from many parts of the world with many different home languages. My family also loves to travel, and I have learned much from my students, too. Many of my former students have graduated from colleges such as Harvard, Boston College and College of the Holy Cross. I have attended their graduations and even weddings. Among students in an adult conversational group was a pediatric oncologist from Uzbekistan. I thrive on sharing my deep love and knowledge of English, literature and writing. It is a pleasure to help students navigate the intricacies of English grammar as well as nurture their potential as perceptive and critical readers and effective writers in all subjects.

I was born to English and have been humbled throughout my teaching career by how students have responded to my enthusiasm by developing their own love and increasing facility for reading and writing as well as an appreciative understanding of good literature.

I look forward to learning of your interest in tutoring. My home has a large, open space that is perfect for individual lessons, complete with Wi-Fi, as well as for meeting conversational groups. I am also willing to travel within a 10 mile radius. Group lessons are offered at a discounted rate, depending on the group size. Please feel welcome to contact me to discuss your goals and how I might assist you in achieving the results you want.

English

English

My education includes a Master of Science in Reading degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and I'm MA certified as a reading specialist and teacher of ESL. My undergraduate degree was in literature, and I have a depth and breadth of knowledge in English and American literature, as well as European and Russian literature. My work as a reading specialist has enriched my ability to teach all students, both native and non-native English speakers. I love to nurture an interest in literature, critical reading, and writing. It has been one of my greatest pleasures to see people blossom academically and personally as they discover truths of life and expand their self-knowledge through reading and writing.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

Many of my students have graduated from colleges such as Harvard, Boston College and College of the Holy Cross. I attended some of their graduations. Most of them were non-speakers of English when I first met them, but they were extraordinarily determined and hard-working, as I'm certain you are. I love nurturing students' interest and facility in writing. College courses often require persuasive and expository writing. Practice will lead to greater confidence.
Grammar

Grammar

As someone who has loved and successfully taught English for many years, I have an obligation to demonstrate complete and comprehensive knowledge of English grammar on a daily basis. My innate knowledge of grammar enabled me to perform well on tests such as the GRE. Most important, I love to impart what I know to my students in a clear manner that encourages them to discover rules through multiple examples and constant use. I love answering students' questions and providing models to help them further in the long and complicated process of internalizing grammar as they progress towards English fluency.
Literature

Literature

Literature was my undergraduate major and has continued to be one of the most important parts of my life. My love and knowledge of English, American and world literature have enriched my life beyond measure. My house is a library. Students find most of the books from their required reading on my shelves. Of course I emphasize the use of literary terms in the discussion and writing of literature. Most important, my love and enthusiasm affect my students.
Writing

Writing

I have MA certification, grades K-12, as a reading specialist and also as a teacher of ESL. I successfully taught those subjects for many years. I am glad to assist students of all ages in all aspects of the English language arts, reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as with interpreting and understanding literature, and honing the writing process and editing.
