I have 40 years' experience working with students with special needs or needing extra academic support. Within the public school and privately, I have tutored in all subjects at the secondary and elementary level. I worked with private students for years or for the time needed for test preparation or support in a specific subject. I have worked privately doing independent tutoring, in the public school and in private school with students on the autism spectrum, with ADHD, with specific learning disabilities, nonverbal learning disabilities and communication disorders. Although my educational background opened other opportunities, including ethical decision making, editing books and writing, and career counseling for adolescents and adults, I have returned to work locally again with individual students.
My undergraduate degree is in English with a minor in zoology. I have a Master's degree in special education. I am Orton Gillingham certified with training at Mass General Hospital, and I have supplemented that training with techniques from Wilson Reading system. I have taken a course in techniques for teaching students learning English. I have a doctorate in developmental and educational psychology with a focus on cognitive differences in learning, stress and coping, motivation and risk and resilience factors. I have been successful teaching adolescent non readers to read and write, giving early learners the boost they need to be successful with reading, including giving a solid background in phonics and comprehension skills, writing, and math and strengthening the skills of average middle school and high school learners needing support. More skilled adolescents have had test scores boosted considerably (MCAS, SAT, ACT) after I have taught them test taking techniques and strengthened vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills. My educational philosophy includes guiding the student to discover information and techniques so learning is internalized and confidence increased, reinforcing information by using different modalities and cycling back as needed, and increasing self awareness as a learner to increase efficiency and satisfaction.
The best decision we have made!
Pam has been working with our nine-year-old son for two months now and it is the best decision we have made for our son. Pam is very experienced and knowledgeable teacher. She personalizes every lesson based on the previous lessons and our aligned objectives. Pam is focusing on his writing and comprehension skills as well as on spelling and grammar. She was able to build a great connection and rapport with my son from the very beginning. He is looking forward to his lessons with Pam. We would highly recommend Pam for every kid who wants to improve their skills in English and writing and / or who wants to excel in it.Snejina, 74 lessons with Pamela
Would not read/evaluate my son's writing
I hired Pamela as a writing tutor for my fourth grader. We had roughly 10 sessions. She seemed pleasant and knowledgeable, establishing a reasonable rapport w/ my son. Over time, much of each session was wasted on readings, comprehension exercises, and in the last session, vocab overview and a mini-lecture on penguins. She was consistently not interested in reading/evaluating my son's writing. After I confronted her about it after the last session, I learned from her lesson review that she is quite upset that my son attends school part-time. From her last lesson review: "I am frustrated by the tutoring situation. I have no other student I know less about. You take him out of school or bring him late, an unusual practice. There has to be a reason the school allows this. . . . I have students with a range of special needs, and they all go to school full time. I have older students who have had therapeutic intervention, but reduced day was never allowed after the placement: home school or full day school. I don’t know what necessitates part time." I told her he attends school part-time up-front, and our sessions were partly during school hours. I wish she had just told me how much that reality bothers her, and I could just seek another tutor. Instead her final lesson review is the first time she mentions it. She did admit to not reading/evaluating his writing much in her lesson review: "I do not always get a copy of what he does, so I cannot evaluate the way I do with other students." She did not behave differently on the multiple occasions when she received a copy of what he wrote or took the original. I am glad to hear that she actually evaluates other students' writing. Apparently she is simply very angry that my son attends school part-time.Rekha, 11 lessons with Pamela
Sweet and knowledgeable tutor
Our son is 6 years old, he has a speech problem which makes it very hard for him to learn to read. Pam has been so sweet and patient with him. She brings amazing support materials to make our kids learning experience enjoyable. He is finally starting learning his letters and the sounds of them. We are very happy to have Pam’s support.Palmira, 45 lessons with Pamela
Very patient, reliable and knowledgeable tutor
Pamela has been one of the best tutors I have worked with. She is very patient and explains things very clearly. I have really enjoyed working with her on all my college assignments. I hope to be able to work with her in the near future.Julie, 6 lessons with Pamela
Pam has tutored our 11-year-old son for 2+ years and during this time he has shown tremendous improvement in both spelling and writing skills. She understands how to work with his personality to get the best out of him. We are very pleased.Paula, 147 lessons with Pamela
NOT at all good for AP BIO:
Her Bio on the website did not indicate that she would teach AP bio- so I never contacted her, she saw my request and reached out to me and said she can teach AP Bio. She has had great reviews, nothing for AP bio, but when she herself contacted me and said she is confident she can teach AP bio, I hired her. Despite me sending her the chapters and the book name ahead of time, she came unprepared and did not teach much in the first lesson. I gave her benefit of doubt and called her again, she knew we were on time crunch. We were making up for lost work as my daughter had been sick, she still did not come well prepared to accomplish the goals for that lesson (took ½ hour more than planned, yet we did not make much progress.) In my opinion, she is a nice person, good teaching style for elementary school kids, or kids who have special needs, very friendly but JUST NOT good for advanced level topics. My purpose to write this review is not to criticize her, but to help other parents like me to know that her expertise are not good enough for AP classes, and to be careful if she contacts them for AP classes. I felt a bit frustrated as we lost time (we only had finite time to make up missed work). In the end, Pamela can be a good teacher but not for AP Biology, I thought a lot before writing this review, but I believe that it is my duty to give this feedback, which may be helpful to fellow parents, it can save money but more importantly save time for the high-school kids. She has many good reviews and I am sure that are true for certain subjects and probably for younger kids. High school kids with AP subjects need tutors who are experienced and Pamela does not have the experience or resources to teach these subjects, specially AP Biology.Dipti, 2 lessons with Pamela
Best decision we ever made for our son!
This review is way overdue. Pam is beyond a 5 star tutor. There are really no words or rating criteria to describe what she has done for our son (and family ) over the last 4 years. Our son has a mild non-verbal learning disability that directly impacts his working memory and ability to process mathmatical thinking. In first grade he was struggling with basic concepts and was falling very behind. We contacted Pam and she has been working with him as his primary math teacher ever since. She has attended his IEP meetings and been instrumental in catching him up two full grades in math as well as supports him with reading and writing. She is an exceptional teacher and knows how to engage him with story telling, fact sharing, and changes sets frequently to keep him engaged and encouraged. She helps him feel confident and proud of his work and has been an incredible source of inspiration. She is helping us to confidently prepare him for the rigors of middle school. Pam has also helped our older son who is an accelerated learner prepare for the ISEE and SSAT private school entrance exams. Pam is much more than a tutor to our family. She has been a God send, friend, mentor and feels like part of our family. When we were very concerned about our son's ability to learn, she has given him the individualized support to help him gain great strides and given me tremendous hope for him as a successful student and for his future. We love Pam and feel so thankful to have found her through Wyzant.Victoria, 621 lessons with Pamela

12/7/2015 Update: Pam is helping my son find his ideas and express them. I can see he stopped dreading English and the shift is a new start: learning that he can have a voice beyond the assignment.Laure, 149 lessons with Pamela
