I am an experienced writer, editor, ESL tutor, and SAT coach. I graduated cum laude from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in English Literature, and my background includes copyediting case studies for professors at Harvard Business School and editing application essays for aspiring graduate students, as well as several years coaching high school students on the verbal part of the SAT.

I have tutored speakers of English as a Second Language with various levels of fluency since 2009, and in 2010, I earned a certificate from the Boston Language Institute in the Cambridge method of teaching English as a Foreign Language. My work as a teacher and editor is particularly gratifying, as it allows me to combine my passion for language with the opportunity to help others fulfill their life's goals.

Acting

Acting

I have extensive experience acting and directing in local theatre companies. Among my favorite roles are Hermione in “The Winter’s Tale” and Ariel in “The Tempest.” During my college years, I played Laura in “The Glass Menagerie,” Blanche in “A Streetcar Named Desire” and many other Tennessee Williams characters. I have performed in Boston, at the Boston Playwright’s Theatre, as well as many venues on the North Shore. Since my experience ranges from Shakespeare to contemporary work, I can help actors give their best performance in plays using language from any era.
Ballet

Ballet

I have been teaching ballet for children and adults for over 25 years. I currently teach at the Marblehead School of Ballet, among other studios on the North Shore of Massachusetts. My training was with the Hartford Ballet Company in Hartford, Connecticut, as well as with the Hartford Conservatory. I have studied with Edward Villella, of New York City Ballet, as well as William Anderson, of American Ballet Theater.
English

English

I have worked as a freelance writer and editor for many years. Among my favorite assignments was editing case studies for the Harvard Business School. I bring that experience to my work as a tutor, helping my students express their ideas elegantly and eloquently, while preserving what is unique about each student's individual voice.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

My TOEFL training is in the interrogatory method. I have helped many adults to improve their spoken and written English and to achieve major life goals, such as passing the United States citizenship test, or the entrance exam to a nursing program.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have been a writing coach for many years, coaching students ranging in age from elementary school through graduate school. Among the most rewarding experiences in my career as a writing coach has been helping my students to write “the best essay of their lives,” as one student told me. My goal as a teacher is to help my students express their ideas elegantly and eloquently, while keeping what is unique about their own voice.
Grammar

Grammar

I have many years of experience as a freelance copy editor, editing case studies for Harvard Business School.
Literature

Literature

I have written essays on American and English literature for my undergraduate degree at Mount Holyoke College, where I wrote an honors thesis on Vladimir Nabokov. I also did graduate work at Harvard, where I wrote papers analyzing the work of Henry James, among others.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I have helped many students improve their SAT scores by as many as 100 points, just by showing them the strategies necessary to answer the Reading questions more quickly and with greater accuracy.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

I have helped many of my students improve their SAT Writing scores by as many as 100 points, simply by teaching them the strategies with which they can answer the questions more quickly and accurately, without second-guessing themselves.
Theater

Theater

I have been acting and directing for many years, as well as teaching theatre classes for children and adults. Since December 2022, I have taught theatre at the Cambridge Senior Center in which we read plays and analyze them. The discussions range from the structure and meaning of each play to an analysis of performance values — considering the many elements that make a production, including costume and set design.

Patient, engaging and knowledgeable

Sarah has been an excellent tutor for my high-schooler. Guiding my son how to write better essays, she starts by discussion on the topic to ensure that he has the knowledge required to formulate his thesis and develop his arguments. Sarah's approach to tutoring is very thorough and tailored. She guides the student through the writing process as opposed to editing the paper already written. My son finds lessons with Sarah extremely helpful.

Good teacher. Very patient. She tried to teach my son “how to think”, not just how to get homework done.
