I'm a happily married father of two boys, four and seven, and live in Ispwich. I've always enjoyed solving math problems and was able to do some tutoring right after college that entailed one on one math session and SAT test preparation. Why do I want to tutor now? Because I want your son or daughter to succeed in the subject. As a high school student, English and history were more challenging for me. Having an enthusiastic tutor in those subjects would have helped me tremendously. I'd like to share my enthusiasm for the subject and help your child work towards their goals.
My methods are suited to each child's needs. I can spend time on individual problem exercises, or I can provide general instruction on math topics. As an environmental consultant, I have worked with a wide range of people and have enjoyed the interaction very much. Much of my work entailed explaining complex problems to my clients in language that they could understand. I look forward to taking a similar approach with your child.
I have a B.A. from Middlebury College with a major in Geography and minor in mathematics and an M.S. from Utah State University in Geography. Bill has been an excellent choice as a tutor for our son, a Junior in High School taking Algebra II. Trying to juggle sport schedules along with studying is challenging but Bill was extremely flexible and understanding. We plan to use him again next year!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a straight A student in Algebra. After college I was an algebra tutor for some 10th grade students. I am comfortable explaining variables, how to solve for a variable and how to make a graph from a function such as y=mx+b.

I have almost 20 years of experience working with MS Excel. I can help your student with several different aspects of the program. Some of the functionality that I would be happy to explain are: using formulas in a cell, sorting data and using the subtotal function, creating pivot tables and pivot charts, how to format a table so it can fit well on a page, using tabs and linking data from one tab to the next, and making charts and graphs.
I have almost 20 years of experience with MS Word. I wrote my master's thesis with it and I have written numerous lengthy documents using the program. Some of the aspects of the program that I would be happy to teach you include: making an outline, using styles to ensure formatting consistency, generating a table of contents, table of figures and table of tables, and creating a bibliography and storing your references in the program.

I can help your student understand concepts such as asymptotes, logarithms, exponents, the quadratic formula, and complex numbers.
I was an SAT tutor for a few months right after college. I very much enjoyed the work and working with student. I understand that the test can be stressful for many students. Practice and review are very helpful in preparing for the test. As a tutor, I can help your student work out word problems, and develop formulas quickly.
I can help your student understand trigonometric equations such as sine, cosine and tangent, how the unit circle works and and how trigonometric equations can be solved.
