As a math tutor, I like to assess what mathematical concepts a child needs assistance with and then work to strengthen their understanding of those mathematical concepts through the use of manipulatives drawings, experiences, or other visual aides.
I am familiar with common core math standards as well as the constructivist (Math Investigations) approach to mathematics instruction. In addition, I have a master's degree in mathematics education with an emphasis on elementary mathematics.
The reading workshops, courses, and trainings hosted by reading specialists has provided me with a toolbox of reading skill and strategies to use during my tutorial sessions.
My education, experience teaching and tutoring students privately and for public school districts has helped me to identify the academic challenges that students may encounter. Having an understanding of those challenges also gives me an opportunity to develop a plan to address a student's academic needs. Being familiar with the testing that occurs at each grade level, has enabled me to teach students study skills and strategies that are needed to obtain a proficient score on those tests.
