Algebra 1

Algebra 1

A large portion of my tutoring experience has been working with students taking Algebra I. I truly love helping students transition to this more challenging type of math. I place a great deal of emphasis on how skills build upon each other as well as the steps of problem solving. My primary goals are to build not only skill, but confidence as well.
COOP/HSPT

COOP/HSPT

I have been working with students to prepare for the HSPT for over 17 years. I begin with a general review of the test as a whole, then target specific sections and types of questions (i.e. the four types of questions found in the verbal section). The math portion of the exam is often the most daunting, so I review targeted topics (i.e. fractions, decimals, percent), then show students how those topics are presented on the test. For many of my students, this is their first experience taking a timed exam of this length. As a result, I place a strong emphasis on timing and have students complete short sets of questions within a certain time frame. This allows my students to gauge their own pace and know when to skip a particular question.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a Massachusetts certified teacher in grades 1-6. I have 20 years of teaching experience and have worked as a tutor for the past 17 years. I have kept my certification current through extensive coursework and attendance at workshops and conferences. I am able to work with students across all subject areas and am especially skilled in math, science and writing.
English

English

I have worked extensively on writing and literary analysis with middle and high school students, including composing college admissions essays.
ISEE

ISEE

For more than ten years, I have worked to prepare students for both the middle and upper-level ISEE. My students consistently score well and gain acceptance to various parochial and private schools in our area.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

A strong foundation in math is essential. Practice with both computation and problem solving makes students confident and successful. So often, I encounter students who know how to "follow the steps" but lack the understanding of why a problem is solved in a particular way or what the answer actually means. The use of the Common Core standards asks students to see the meaning behind the math--I can help give them that understanding.
PSAT

PSAT

I have tutored students preparing for the SAT/PSAT for more than 10 years. I have worked extensively to become fluent in my understanding of the updated versions of these tests that began last spring. My previous students have improved their overall scores by 100-300 points.
Reading

Reading

As both a tutor and classroom teacher, I have worked extensively with students who need to improve and practice their reading comprehension skills. I employ a number of strategies based on a student's specific learning style and strengths. As a passionate reader myself, I love discussing books and enjoy seeing a student's confidence in and enjoyment of reading grow!
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have been tutoring students in preparation for the SAT exam for the past 11 years. All of my students have raised their overall score by 100-250 points. I am familiar with all parts of the new online version of the SAT and can offer strategies and review for each.

Social Studies

I have worked as a classroom teacher at the elementary level, and as a gifted education teacher at the middle school level. In both positions, I was responsible for planning and implementing social studies lessons and units for students of all abilities. As a tutor, I have worked on history/social studies with students in grades 4-12.

First session and already thrilled!

Jennifer met with my son for the first time last week. She was wonderful and he really enjoyed the session. He already feels much better about the SSAT process and is looking forward to working with her weekly until he is ready for the test! She is very knowledgeable and a great resource!

Best Tutor Ever

Jen teaches math but is by far the best tutor my daughter has ever had in any subject. She is super clear, never rushes the concepts and is high energy / fun. My daughter always feel energized about math after she leaves.

Excellent...keeps my son engaged throughout the entire lesson

My son has had two lessons so far with Jennifer and he really enjoys them. He's preparing to take the SSAT and Jennifer has mapped out a plan for his studies. She's assisting with all components of the test.

Very positive!!

Jennifer exceeded our expectations! She came to the house ready and sat right down to work. She had some excellent suggestions about taking the PSATs but most importantly: she was very positive in her comments and helped instill some confidence in preparation for taking the test. That part cannot be underestimated.

Personable, knowledgeable and flexible.

Jennifer was excellent! She gave my son very helpful tips to help him with his SAT's. We plan on continuing with her over the summer so he can take it again in the fall.
