My enthusiasm for supporting students academically stems from the training and mentoring opportunities afforded by teaching. Individual training and small team building were very important to me while working for large corporations. As a solo practitioner, I’ve found helping students to be equally rewarding.

I have over 25 years of business valuation experience and more than 12 years managing money. I received my academic training at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and Katholieke Universitiet te Leuven, Belgium, as an international exchange scholar. My professional career includes Shawmut Bank, N.A., PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, and Valuation Research Corporation prior to forming ADH Advisors. I hold the professional designations of Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Market Technician (CMT).

I bring a unique combination of academic training and professional experience to traditional business subjects such as corporate finance, accounting, statistics, investments and economics, among others. I also have an appreciation for language skills. As a native English speaker living abroad, I assisted university doctoral students with punctuation, grammar, and diction for their Ph.D. dissertations. Additionally, I’ve published approximately 30 articles. The skills and perspective I bring to the learning process are unique, combining a traditional academic framework with an orientation to practical application.

I assist students by reinforcing in-class lectures with assignments intended to illustrate practical applications of concepts, which are often constructed from past professional experience. I prefer weekly learning sessions during the semester for business courses. English requirements are often event-driven and I attempt to accommodate ad hoc assignments. Scheduling challenges limit my availability primarily to undergraduate students, although I will assist all students with English narratives, irrespective of academic discipline.

Business

I have 25 years of business experience as a financial analyst. I specialize in closely-held business valuation, Securities and Exchange Commission valuation reporting, expert valuation reports and opinions. I received my graduate training at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business (finance, statistics) and Katholieke Universitiet te Leuven, Belgium (international finance) as an international exchange scholar. I hold the designation of CFA from the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts and MTA from the Market Technicians Association. My professional experience includes Finance Officer for Shawmut Bank, N.A., Director of Corporate Value Consulting for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Technical Analyst, Valuation Research Corporation. During the past 9 years I have been providing financial advisory services as Principal at ADH Advisors.
CFA,

CFA

Congratulations! If you are reading this you are probably contemplating or enrolled in the CFA program. There is no question that the preparation required for each of the three levels is almost a full-time job, with many candidates professing to spend greater than 300 hours preparing for an exam level. The program’s Body of Knowledge requires candidates to master a very broad and detailed curriculum of finance and economics. With a program completion rate of only 16.0 percent, the CFA designation is regarded as the gold standard of professional credentials within the global investment community. I am a CFA charter holder working in corporate finance and investment management. I have 25 years of professional corporate finance experience using the concepts, tools and methods developed in the Level I and Level II curricula. I have also been awarded the designation of a CMT by the Market Technicians Association, a program which complements fundamental corporate finance skills and extends upon many of the portfolio management concepts presented at Level III. I am willing to work individually or in small groups to offer weekly sessions starting approximately seven months prior to the exam. I offer customized learning and general CFA preparation guidance from an academic and practitioner’s perspective.
Finance,

Finance

Finance is one of the most quantified and theorized areas of the business curriculum. Theoretical finance is typically presented from the perspective of the firm (corporate finance) or capital markets (investments). The finance curricula of business programs is constantly evolving with the field, although the “big ideas” such as Efficient Market Theory, the M&M Irrelevance Theorems, CAPM, and Option Pricing Models, among others, provide the theoretical foundation. More often than not, students who struggle with introductory finance classes get lost in the midst of mathematical detail, over emphasizing the theoretical mechanics of the bigger concept. My academic background and professional training as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Market Technician (CMT) can provide a practical perspective on many of the theoretical models presented in corporate finance and investment courses. I help students focus on relevant issues, explain key concepts in plain English and learn the limitations of theoretical finance models. From a practitioner’s perspective, formulae may be memorized but understanding a theory means understanding the logic, principles underlying the final equation and how to apply the framework to problems encountered on the job.
Financial Accounting,

Financial Accounting

I possess a very broad and in-depth knowledge of accounting principles. My academic foundation is business, including advanced graduate level accounting course work at the University of Chicago and Katholieke Universitiet te Leuven, Belgium. I received professional training at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, one of the largest consulting and assurance firms in the world. In my 25.0 years as a valuation analyst, I've learned the language fluently from numerous professional assignments in financial due diligence, transaction modeling and analysis, Securities and Exchange Commission reporting, expert opinions, forensic accounting and business valuation, among others. Accounting is much different than the majority of academic disciplines, especially those in a typical liberal arts curriculum. The accounting course is a cumulative study subject, where each new topic builds on previously learned concepts and principles. For students experiencing difficulty with accounting coursework, the first step is to pin-point the items of confusion. I then strive to develop a student’s intuitive understanding of “why” behind each concept with exercises or real world examples. Learning “how” accounting is performed can be accomplished with related extra problems for additional practice, similar to those encountered on exams which require logic and reasoning rather the ability to memorize.

My appreciation for the English language is a product of numerous experiences. During my academic training, I studied at the Universitat Freiburg in Germany and the Universitiet te Leuven in Belgium where I assisted doctoral candidates with punctuation, grammar, diction and sentence construction for their Ph.D. dissertations. As a finance professional, I've authored numerous expert reports and provided legal testimony, requiring a very precise use of proper English. My writings in Caracci v. Commissioner 456 F.3d 444 (5th Circuit 2006) were acknowledged in the court's decision. During my professional career I have also authored 30 published articles which have appeared in academic, industry and trade journals.

Awesome tutor!

Allen is a very patient and knowledgeable tutor. He helped me get a top grade in my Finance course. He patiently explained to me the various concepts of the course and also helped me prepare for my exams. His professional experience helped me broaden my understanding of finance beyond the course. I was very lucky to have him as a tutor and would definitely recommend him if you need help with an undergraduate or graduate accounting or finance course.
