Hi, I'm Mulan! I have a BS in chemistry from Northeastern University and a PhD in chemistry and materials science from Princeton University. As a tutor, my goal is to make chemistry less intimidating by relating it to the world around us and concepts we're already familiar with. I work with students to help build confidence in their own understanding and to create a stable foundation from which to learn new information.
I was a peer tutor for 3 years in undergrad and really enjoyed working with other students 1 on 1 to help make concepts more understandable. I mainly focused on tutoring general chemistry and organic chemistry, and have experience working with people majoring in chem, who are on a pre-med track, and who are taking chem classes specialized for other majors. In order to improve my own tutoring, I became certified with the College Reading and Learning Association as a Level III tutor, which required me to complete training on many topics, tutor for over 75 hours overall, and spend time training other tutors. I was given the Outstanding Service Award for my contributions to the peer tutoring program.
While in grad school, I was the TA for a general chemistry lab course for a year, where I supervised students doing experiments and helped them interpret the results for their lab reports. I also held office hours for students to get support beyond what I could provide during class. I really enjoyed getting to know my students throughout the semester and hope that I can create a similar relationship with my tutees in future. I was honored to receive the Pickering Teaching Award in recognition of the good evaluations from my students.
Most of my previous experience has been with college students in general and organic chem classes, but I am also happy to adapt my style for those in high school.
