Hello, my name is Melissa B. I hold an Initial Massachusetts teaching license in English 5-12, History 5-12, and Humanities 5-8. In addition, I have 15 years of experience teaching GED classes both online and in person. My degrees include a BA with a concentration in English Literature with an overall GPA of 3.83 from Western New England and a M.Ed. 5-12 with an overall GPA of 4.0 from Fitchburg State University.

During the course of my career, as a GED instructor I have received specialized training in how to instruct students to be successful when sitting for the GED. This has included extensive instruction on how to teach reading, instruction on how the GED is written, as well as being required to take the GED myself. I have taught GED students age 16 and over who have ranged in ability from an elementary school level all the way to test ready. I have also taught students who have had a range of disabilities. This is work that I am extremely passionate about.

I have also tutored students on multiple occassions through the local public system in my hometown. Whether I am teaching GED students or tutoring children I have some fundamental values in regards to education that I firmly adhere to. My first value is that every student is an individual and should be treated as such. This value is largely informed by Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. Students learn in all different styles and rates. For that reason, I try my best to differentiate my instruction as much as possible. In addition, I am a firm believer in scaffolding instruction by presenting students with additional information and leading questions to enable students to make a leap in their understanding of a concept that they are struggling with as needed. My last value that I adhere to is the idea that my job as a teacher or tutor is to eventually eliminate myself from the student's need. This is done when the student can apply their knowledge of educational concepts and ideas independently.
