About Shalini

Hi there! I'd love to help you out with your studies, whether it's Chemistry, French, preparing for the TOEFL exam, or crafting essays for English or college applications.

No one student is the same, so one-size-fits-all approaches do not work. I focus on an individual student's learning style in order to convey the material in a way best suited to the student. In addition to explaining concepts in a graspable manner and outlining strategies to tackle the given tasks in a systematic and efficient way, I will provide practice problems and follow up with you when you get stuck on anything. I am *always* on call to answer questions. I will encourage you and provide a source of positivity because I truly do believe that if you try, you can do it!

With patience, commitment, and willpower, any student can and will improve in their understanding of material and, thus, their grades. I believe that with fundamental understanding, grades will follow suit.

I hold degrees in Chemical Engineering and Political Science. I am well-versed in STEM subjects including chemistry and a range of mathematics. I also have a solid background in government and history-related studies. I love working with students, as I have worked as an elementary school classroom assistant with third graders for two years, a French language instructor, and a one-on-one tutor with students of various ages. I have also worked as a resume/cover letter editor, helping students create effective applications for job prospects. I have professionally helped students with their academic and admission essays for over five years. My priority is providing a patient and thorough review of your essays with detailed constructive criticism that can really help you express yourself in a way that is remembered.

I hope to have the opportunity to work with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have worked as a college essay editor for over five years. At the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I worked for Career Services where I offered college admissions essay editing services. I assisted hundreds of students with their personal statements and statements of interest for graduate school, including PhD programs, law school, and medical school, as well as resumes and letters of intent for job applications and internship opportunities.

I have continued as a freelance editor and have worked with applicants on undergraduate and post-graduate application essays who have gone on to Stanford, Tufts, medical school, and more. I offer constructive criticism on every aspect of an essay, from the grammar and syntax to content. Every piece of work is a piece of art, and the idea is to refine it to best reflect the writer's story in their most meaningful, poignant, and powerful voice so that the admissions counselors will read an essay they will remember. It's about truly and genuinely expressing one's own self in a way that stands true to the author.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was a classroom assistant/tutor for two years working with third grade students on math, reading, writing and other assignments. I worked with students individually and in groups to help them with their academic studies and had to adapt my teaching style for each student so that the student gained the most out of our sessions. I am very comfortable with K-6 learning material and am confidant I can tutor these lessons to students. When I was still in school, I volunteered at a local KUMON grading students' math worksheets and providing assistance to students. I have also helped a student throughout his elementary schooling process, and weekly work with a 5th grader on her homework (mostly math-related).

Social Studies

I gained a degree in Political Science. Many of my classes were focused on history, such as World and European History, current events, and writing research papers. I also had to take extensive notes for a variety of classes, and I am aware through my own experience that note taking is a skill that is difficult to hone but common for social studies, and it is something I have perfected over the years.

Patient and Knowledgable

Shalini did a great job with my son. She patient and kept him on task. She is helping build his confidence in French.
