Bio

I have a Master's degree in Education and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. In addition, I have 12 years experience teaching young children (Pre-K to 6th grade) and one year teaching English composition and literature to college students, as well as a semester of tutoring them. I have a Master's degree in Education and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. In addition, I have 12 years experience teaching young children (Pre-K to 6th grade) and one year teaching English composition and literature to college students, as well as a semester of tutoring them. I also led a literacy enrichment program in New York City in which I developed an original curriculum for the Board of Education. While I have taught all subjects, my forte is in English and writing. I love igniting my student's passion for reading, writing and written expression. One way I do this is through getting to know my students as individuals and tapping into their unique interests.

I listen carefully to my students and figure out what makes them tick. I make a genuine effort to put my students at ease so that they can truly be themselves around me. I think that connecting to my students on a personal level and discovering their interests is the key to their learning.

I taught children as a classroom teacher for 12 years and tutored (elementary - HS) for 3+ years. I have taught all elementary school subject areas. I have also worked in a uniquely progressive pedagogical setting in New York City.

I taught 3rd grade for five years, Pre-K for 3 years and Science to 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders for 4 years in New York City private schools. Currently, I tutor students in English Language Arts (with an emphasis on writing) at the Community Classroom in Florence, MA. I earned my Master's Degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from NYU in 1990. I also possess permanent NY State Teacher Certification for Nursery - 6th grade.

I taught both English Composition and English Literature classes to freshmen college students at Georgia College. I have also tutored college students at Central Georgia Technical College, Bard Micro College Holyoke and Williston Northampton High School in English and writing skills. Currently, I tutor a HS students in AP English Composition. I also tutor middle school and elementary students in English Language Arts (reading and writing). I have 12 years head classroom teaching experience which included the teaching of reading and writing.

I have experience teaching an English Literature class to college freshmen students at Georgia College. I also have experience tutoring college students at Central Georgia Technical College, Bard Micro College Holyoke and Williston Northampton High School in English literature. Currently, I tutor a HS student in AP English Composition, a class which requires students to analyze literature with a critical eye and write analyses with citations in MLA format. In addition, I tutor a middle school student in the reading of literature and the completion of assignments which require thoughtful responses to the text backed by specific examples and quotations as evidence.

As a teacher for 12+ years, I have ample experience with public speaking before audiences of young people, college students and adults. For every year of my teaching, I spoke for Curriculum Nights, offering detailed presentations on the areas covered in my curriculum and my approach to teaching, as well as concluding with a question-answer period. I also worked both as a volunteer and seasonal park ranger in the Interpretative Division at Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico (2001) and Bryce Canyon in Utah (2002) respectively, where I led public programs in the form of both evening presentations and guided tours. Finally, I developed and hosted my own radio shows at Georgia College (2015) and Northampton, Massachusetts (2016). Both programs involved introducing concepts and interviewing guests publicly on live broadcasts.

While earning my MFA, I also taught freshmen level English Composition and Literature. In order to graduate, I created a book-length thesis with related short stories and passed an oral thesis defense attended by professors in my program.

In addition, I worked as a writing tutor at Central Georgia Technical College (9/13 - 6/14) and again at Bard Microcollege Holyoke (1/18 - 3/18) and Williston Northampton School (4/18 - 6/18). Currently I am tutoring a HS student in AP English Composition.
