About Olenka

Bio

I graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in Mathematics, cum laude, and a B.S. in Secondary Mathematics Education, specializing in grades 8-12. During my time at BU, I gained a deep understanding of grade school math concepts and their connections to higher level math. I spent time in preschool and 6th-12th grade classrooms, learning from master teachers in the Boston area, and connecting with diverse learners both one-on-one and teaching lessons in front of the classroom.

I started tutoring online in 2019, and have been tutoring online in one-on-one format ever since. I thrive in the individual format, where both of us are in a comfortable space at home, with time to focus on getting to know you as a learner and a human so that I can better help you achieve your math goals. I have tutored students with all kinds of different backgrounds, needs, and aspirations, but I specialize in working with students who have low math self-esteem, who feel like they can't do it. We will work to build a growth mindset. I myself didn't coast through my math career... mistakes are a part of learning and everyone can do hard things with the right cheerleaders in your corner! I have worked with students with language processing challenges, ADHD, anxiety, and interrupted schooling. I am a warm, compassionate, nurturing tutor who will meet you where you are and empower you with encouragement and practical skills.

I have also worked with many students who are looking to get ahead, work on higher-level problem solving skills, and creating personalized instruction for next year's concepts.

I teach math because I truly love it, deeply nourished by the opportunity to spend my time solving problems and connecting concepts to relay them from new perspectives to diverse learners. I recognize the way math serves as a gateway to success in our education system, and I am dedicated to my role as a tutor and educator in building up my students' confidence to achieve their goals in math class and beyond.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra 1 all 5 years that I have been tutoring online, as well as for one semester in the classroom. My expertise lies in helping students who think they can't do it, overcome their fear of letters in math, and adapting my lessons to provide an underlying motivation for Algebra that each student can connect with. One of my proudest student relationships was last year; I met her after she had just failed 8th grade math, and we worked together all summer to identify gaps and make up for lost time before supporting her throughout the Algebra 1 coursework. She proudly earned a B.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have tutored Algebra 2 every year of my 5 years of online tutoring. I also taught it for one semester in the classroom. One of my favorite parts of teaching Algebra 2 is empowering students to take full advantage of graphing software and learning how to use their graphing calculator to develop a deep visual and conceptual understanding to the functions we study.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is my favorite subject to tutor. Students often struggle with it because it is so different from Algebra, but it is also the most applicable to real-world problem solving. I specialize in helping students master writing proofs and I have taught it as an individualized summer course 3 times.
